Caution: Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame
A new behind-the-scenes photo reveals that Thor's Stormbreaker training was handled by none other than Joe Russo himself in Avengers: Endgame. One of the most memorable scenes in last year's Avengers: Infinity War came towards the very end of the climatic battle between the assembled superheroes and Thanos' army, as the big purple baddie sought to put the finishing touch on his collection of Infinity Stones. Thor had spent most of the movie constructing a new weapon, Stormbreaker, and arrived late to the battle. Thanks to his newfound strength however, the God of Thunder managed to land an almighty blow upon Thanos' torso. The day looked to have been truly saved, but the villain simply mocked the wound, uttering the immortal line, "you should have gone for the head" before snapping his fingers and completing his goal.
This moment was gloriously revisited early in Avengers: Endgame. After the emergence of Captain Marvel, the remaining Avengers head over to Thanos' retirement garden to finish off the Titan and use the Infinity Stones to reverse the snap. After realizing the second part of this mission was no longer possible, Thor decides to take matters into his own hands and, in one fell swoop, beheads the weakened Thanos where he kneels. When his actions are called into question by Rocket Raccoon, the Asgardian can't resist one last quip, nonchalantly telling his furry friend, "I went for the head."
Joe Russo, one half of Avengers: Endgame's sibling directing duo, has now posted a behind-the-scenes photo of himself with Stormbreaker in-hand, directing Chris Hemsworth. The image also comes with a caption referencing the "go for the head" gag. The scene shown derives from the movie's first act where Thor is still morosely reeling from the events of Avengers: Infinity War in the team's compound and long before the God of Thunder begins working on his beer belly.

The photo contains a few neat details, the most obvious being just how huge the Stormbreaker prop is. It's difficult to appreciate the size of the weapon when it's being swung around by Thor in a blitz of CGI madness in the Avengers movies, and seeing Joe Russo holding the prop in the cold light of day really begs the question, how could Thor miss Thanos' head with a blade that big?
Secondly, it's amusing to see that the Avengers, like many families, have a BBQ loitering somewhere on their property. Perhaps Black Window fancied a change from peanut butter sandwiches, maybe it's a stereotype-baiting nod to Chris Hemsworth's Australian roots or perhaps the cast were peckish on set and Robert Downey Jr. forgot to bring his blueberries.
Avengers: Endgame was full of moments that had MCU pans punching the air in excitement and Thor's witty retort while killing Thanos certainly would've been one of them. However, the early stages of Avengers: Endgame were laden with sorrow, remorse and loss, as the world counted its death toll and this scene provided the film's opening with a feel-good moment to balance out that sadness.
