Avengers: Endgame directors, Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed a since deleted scene that would have made Chris Hemsworth's Fat Thor appear even worse in the movie than he does now. It's been just over a year to the day since Endgame first landed in theaters, and in celebration of the anniversary (not to mention, as a means to connect with fans and pass the time while in lock down) the Russos took part in a watch party for Endgame during which they shared behind-the-scenes videos, images, and other fun information about the making of the movie.
Endgame is the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga, finally concluding the Avengers' long struggle to save the universe from Thanos using the Infinity Stones. Endgame itself finds those Avengers who survived Thanos' snap five years earlier in Avengers: Infinity War living dramatically different lives. Some characters, like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, made changes to their lives that bettered them, while others, like Hemsworth's Thor, did the complete and total opposite.
Endgame's Fat Thor (as he became known) is a Thor who's allowed his guilt and depression overtake him, and the result is a version of the god who's unkept, unhealthy, and just a generally gross person. He's really let himself go, basically, and it's reflective of the low point Endgame finds Thor in. During their Endgame watch-a-long, though, the Russos revealed that the Fat Thor seen in the finished movie isn't even as gross as he could have been. In a scene that was either cut or never actually filmed (it isn't specified), Thor would have been shown peeing off the balcony in New Asgard as just another example of how depraved he'd become. Check out the Russos' tweet revealing the deleted scene, below.
Their reasoning against including the scene is certainly understandable. Fat Thor is already pretty depraved as he exists in Endgame now, so there's not much gained from the scene. Plus, as it is, Endgame is a three-hour movie, so does it really need a scene that's just another joke? (And not even that good of one.)
Avengers: Endgame does nail the ending of the MCU's first saga chapter. The movie was a critical success, box office smash, and provided a mostly satisfying conclusion to a decades-spanning story. There are some elements of the movie that aren't as well received as others, though, and for some fans, Fat Thor isn't one of Endgame's highlights. To them, Fat Thor's inclusion is fat-shaming and makes light of Thor's depression. However, in Endgame's defense, Thor's final form in the movie doesn't have him appear magically fit again, suggesting that Thor's well-being isn't strictly tied to his superhero physique.
In which case, maybe Thor's next appearance in the MCU, whether it's in Thor: Love and Thunder or before, shouldn't completely return him to his previous buff self? Instead, it could spend more time with Thor as heals mentally and emotionally before immediately having him trim down. It might also help dispel some of criticism that they made Thor fat as a joke and nothing more. Whatever they choose to do, let's at least be thankful the Russos didn't feel the need to include Fat Thor urinating on screen in Avengers: Endgame.
