Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man acknowledges Avengers: Endgame’s “Thanus” theory in a clip promoting Disney’s latest cruise ship. Encompassing 21 films worth of storytelling, Endgame swiftly became one of the biggest and most anticipated blockbusters of all time. After the Mad Titan’s snap eliminates half of all life in Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame saw the remaining Avengers, led by Iron Man and Captain America, fight to bring everyone back. Long before audiences ever witnessed the "time heist" or Tony Stark’s fateful snap on the big screen, however, there were many ideas circulating as to how the Avengers could defeat Thanos.
The most infamous Endgame fan theory revolved around Ant-Man, who fans posited could defeat Thanos by shrinking down, crawling up his rear-end, and enlarging from inside to kill the Mad Titan. While no one truly thought this would happen in the film, its potential effectiveness and inherently ridiculous nature took the internet by storm, resulting in a plethora of memes and even a theme song. Now, that theory has been addressed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.
Ant-Man News on Twitter recently shared a clip from Avengers: Quantum Encounter, an interactive film that will be shown as part of the Disney Wish cruise ship. The video shows the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and Ant-Man (Rudd) doing a special presentation, in which the latter begins by addressing the “elephant in the room” regarding the "Thanus" theory. Given the number of times Rudd was asked about this Thanos/Ant-Man theory on the Endgame press tour, seeing the actor talk about it isn’t anything new. However, hearing the MCU's Scott Lang himself address it is a testament to how the theory has taken on a life of its own. It has become so viral and associated with superhero cinema, in fact, that The Boys season 3 parodied the Ant-Man/Thanos theory in its opening and now infamous Termite scene. Now, an in-universe reference from Ant-Man himself to the Thanus theory exemplifies just how popular the theory has become.
Marvel Studios has built a reputation as the type of studio that listens to its fans, and often appeases them with humor. For example, Spider-Man: No Way Home brought several memes to life —from Norman Osborn’s utterance of “I’m something of a scientist myself” to three Spider-Men pointing at one another. Ms. Marvel episode 1 even features the first-ever AvengerCon, a scene which contains variety of references including a caricature of "America's ass." It remains to be seen if the above clip is considered MCU canon, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ant-Man arguing with a fan on the street about Avengers: Endgame's "Thanus" theory when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania releases in theaters on February 17, 2023.
