New MCU fan-art imagines Steve Rogers' final mission returning all the Infinity Stones after Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 Joe and Anthony Russo blockbuster wrapped up the Infinity Saga with the defeat of Thanos. It also functioned as the swan song to some of the franchise's founding heroes including the former Captain America. But unlike Iron Man's story, there are still mysteries surrounding his final fate.

After the Mad Titan was defeated in Endgame, Steve was tasked with finishing the Avengers' remaining mission: return all the Infinity Stones back to their original location and setting from the time heist. As Smart Hulk promised to the Ancient One, this would prevent creating multiple timelines due to the change in narrative. This final adventure didn't play out on screen, but the general idea was that Steve accomplished the task and went back further in time to spend the rest of his days with Peggy Carter before jumping again to the main MCU timeline to pass the shield to Sam Wilson.

While Steve's reunion with Peggy was a fitting ending for the character, interest over how his last mission panned out continued. Marvel Studios has not expressed any intent on tackling this narrative, but digital creator elilusionista.cl imagines how things may have gone down through a series of illustrations. Check them out below:

The creator proposed that this adventure be chronicled in Steve's own Disney+ series titled Captain America: The Last Mission. Since it was announced that Marvel Studios is creating exclusive TV content for the streaming platform, this idea has been suggested several times. There's obviously clamor to see what actually happened to Steve during this time, especially since there are still questions about what his life was after he was reunited with Peggy. The Russos and Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely having contradicting answers when asked about this further pique the curiosity of the public.

Recently, there have been reports that Marvel Studios is trying to get back Chris Evans back to the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. It's uncertain what it is but both the actor and Kevin Feige denied them. Still, they have been persistent with subsequent news claiming that while there are plans for a Captain America 4 film starring Sam Wilson after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Evans' rumored endeavor is separate. It's worth noting that the franchise has a stacked slate running until 2024 with several other movies and shows that have yet to get a release date. Assuming that Steve will indeed be back, it's curious when his new project might roll out. In any case, at least there's a justifiable reason for his return if it will be to reveal what happened to his final mission.
