Peter Quill aka Star-Lord will be back in Avengers: Endgame, and here's everything we know about his upcoming role and future. Star-Lord has been a breakout role for Chris Pratt, who has reshaped his career from just a funny guy on Parks and Recreation to now being a true leading man in Hollywood. This is largely thanks to the success of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but he finally got a chance to join the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War.

The crossover event allowed Star-Lord to meet Thor, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man, but it was the latter three that he spent the most time with. His fellow humans helped him and part of the Guardians team take on Thanos on his home planet of Titan. Star-Lord helped create a plan that was nearly successful in removing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand, but they fell short of completing it. This proved to be a massive mistake for the heroes, as Thanos would then go on to gather all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of the universe's population - including Star-Lord.

Since audiences last saw Peter blowing away in the wind, he has not been featured in any of the marketing for Avengers: Endgame. This is expected to stay the same, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Endgame marketing will not feature any of the dead heroes. There's no need to worry that Star-Lord won't actually appear in the movie, though, so here's a rundown of all the details on his Endgame role.

Star-Lord (And The Guardians of the Galaxy) Will Return In Avengers: Endgame

The Guardians of the Galaxy on their ship in Avengers Infinity War

When Avengers: Infinity War re-introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy, the team was completely assembled aboard The Benatar as they responded to the Asgardian distress signal. Once they rescued Thor, though, the team was quickly sent on different paths. Rocket and Groot went with the God of Thunder to Nidavillir, while the rest of the team journeyed to Knowhere to try and get the Aether before Thanos did. They were too late, and the confrontation with the Mad Titan resulted in Gamora being taken from them. She then guided Thanos to Vormir, where he sacrificed her in order to obtain the Soul Stone. Meanwhile, Rocket and Groot remained with Thor all the way to Wakanda, and Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis went to Titan. The failure of the latter group to defeat Thanos split the team apart even more, as everyone other than Rocket became victims of Thanos' snap.

Even though this made it appear as if their stories are done, Endgame will feature them all returning in some form. Most of the actors have previously been linked to filming on the fourth Avengers film, with Saldana specifically being a key piece to the popular theories that time travel will allow every MCU character to be featured. While this is likely going to be one of the ways Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy will return in Endgame, it is also expected that they'll actually be brought back to life by the end of the film. The only one who isn't all-but-guaranteed to be fully resurrected is Gamora. She was not a snap victim and rather killed out of necessity for Thanos, so if the goal of the surviving heroes is to simply reverse the snap, then her fate will not be changed. Whether or not the Guardians of the Galaxy actually get another chance at fighting Thanos once they're back alive remains to be seen.

Star-Lord's Infinity War Mistake May Be Explained

Star-Lord and Thanos in Avengers Infinity War

It may not even be up to the remaining heroes to try and pull this task off if it wasn't for Star-Lord's blunder in Infinity War. His plan to subdue Thanos on Titan actually worked and they were mere seconds away from taking the Infinity Gauntlet from his massive purple hand. But, when it was revealed to Star-Lord that Thanos was mourning because of Gamora's death, he couldn't control himself. The emotional response from Star-Lord (one that is properly in character with how he's been portrayed before), results in him punching Thanos in the face. The Russo brothers have defended this decision, while noting that Thor not going for the head is just as egregious. Mantis is no longer being able to suppress Thanos' mind as a result, allowing him to get free and ultimately achieve his goal of reducing the universe's population.

This moment has been highly debated by fans ever since it happened, with many saying Star-Lord's mistake is directly responsible for the Avengers losing. However, Avengers: Endgame could reveal that this had to happen exactly as it played out. Doctor Strange saw 14,000,605 possible futures about their fight with Thanos, and, somehow, this is the only timeline in which they are ultimately successful. While there are thousands, if not millions, of variables at play with this specific outcome, Endgame may very well explain that Star-Lord losing his cool and punching Thanos was a necessary step in the long-term victory. Of course, it is also possible that the movie will not directly address his meltdown and just let this head canon be the explanation for Star-Lord's reaction. Endgame has over a decade of stories to tie up after all, so they may not have time to explain why or if Star-Lord's response was vital to the endgame that Doctor Strange saw.

What Future For Star-Lord Will Avengers: Endgame Tease?

Despite this monumental error in the minds of most, Star-Lord will still go on to lead the Guardians of the Galaxy after Avengers: Endgame concludes. Pratt reportedly signed a five-picture deal with Marvel Studios originally, so this will be his fourth appearance so far - leaving one movie left to close out the Guardians trilogy. Disney may have fired director James Gunn from the project, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still going to happen eventually. They have Gunn's script in place and just now need a director to come aboard who can bring the story to life. And, since the end of the trilogy will likely take place after the events of the last two Avengers movies, it's fair to assume that Star-Lord and the Guardians will be very different when their next movie happens.

For Star-Lord, specifically, his possible failure in Infinity War could show him how he can be a better leader for the team. His recklessness and lack of true command of his team may have cost the galaxy this time, and one would hope that he will vow never to let that happen again. He's the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy after all, so maybe this will be the push he needs to take this job more seriously and develop more than 12 percent of his plans from now on. This may be even more necessary if Endgame ends with some of the original Avengers dying or retiring too. The Guardians of the Galaxy could be more important than ever to protect the universe, so Star-Lord leading the charge in making sure they can adequately do their jobs and prevent the next Decimation-level event from happening sounds like a logical next step for them.

Depending on how Endgame concludes, however, Star-Lord may not yet be concentrating on the bigger picture and may instead be focused on a more personal quest. Since Gamora was sacrificed for the Soul Stone, she would not be brought back to life if Endgame simply revives those who were dusted. This could lead to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 focusing on a mission to try and bring Gamora back. Her soul could be trapped inside the Soul Stone after all, so they may just need to to find someone who can let her out. Considering the Adam Warlock tease at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and his comic links to the Soul Stone, he could potentially be the key. If saving Gamora does become Star-Lord's post-Endgame goal, then it will be fascinating to see if his story continues beyond it. Pratt previously saying he wants to extend his MCU contract, but he could sacrifice himself to let her live. Star-Lord may very well step up to the plate and be one of the MCU's biggest faces after Avengers: Endgame, so fans should expect some level of teasing for what he could do next.
