Enigmatic filmmaker Tommy Wiseau has released a bizarre but kind of brilliant mashup of Avengers: Endgame and his cult B-movie The Room. For those who haven’t had the strange pleasure of seeing The Room, it was released in 2003 and stars Wiseau as a San Francisco banker named Johnny and focuses on the love triangle between him, his fiancée Lisa (Juliette Danielle) and his best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). Infamous for its bizarre storytelling, many technical flaws and Wiseau’s eccentric performance, The Room quickly achieved cult status and is often hailed as one of the best worst movies in the history of cinema - one of those movies that are so bad, they’re kind of good.
Since the release of The Room, Wiseau’s filmmaking career hasn’t exactly been wildly busy (perhaps unsurprisingly) although he and Sestero did team back up in 2017 to make Best F(r)iends - a movie inspired by a road trip Wiseau and Sestero took after The Room came out. That same year, Wiseau and The Room were the subject of The Disaster Artist. Directed by and starring James Franco as Wiseau, the film was based on Sestero’s non-fiction book of the same name and chronicled the troubled production of The Room.
Now it seems like Wiseau is making a bid to get in with the MCU franchise after releasing his bizarrely brilliant mashup video. Named Avengers: Friend Game, the video features scenes from Avengers: Endgame intercut with scenes from The Room and opens with Wiseau asking Nick Fury about his sex life. It even has its own theme song constructed from classic quotes from The Room like “Oh, hi Mark” and “You’re tearing me apart Lisa” and at one point Sestero pops up and asks Thanos “Why are you, like, killing people and stuff?” Good point, Greg, good point. The video is so weird, it’s hard to sum up but you can watch the mashup in full below.
Interestingly, this isn’t Wiseau’s first dalliance with the MCU. Back in 2015 when the much-maligned Fantastic Four was released, Wiseau expressed an interest in directing a sequel, being one of the film’s few fans. Unfortunately for Wiseau, in light of how terrible Fantastic Four was, a sequel obviously never happened.
But now, with a ton of Phase 4 MCU movies headed our way over the next few years, maybe - just maybe - Marvel could find some room (pun intended) for Wiseau. There’s even a Fantastic Four reboot in development, which so far doesn’t seem to have a director attached. It’s unlikely, but The Room fans can dream and even if Wiseau and the MCU’s paths are never destined to cross again, we’ve always got his new movie Big Shark to look forward to when it’s released later this year.
