Why Avengers: Endgame Set Photos Show Captain Marvel On Vormir

Vormir in Avengers Endgame and Captain Marvel

Avengers: Endgame set photos seem to show Captain Marvel on Vormir - but they don't actually hint at a deleted scene or rewrites at all. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were shot back-to-back, and they were something of a logistical nightmare for Marvel Studios; the film had a massive cast, including a whole host of A-listers, and countless schedules had to be carefully coordinated. That led the Russo brothers to keep deleted scenes to a minimum; with the exception of some ad lib scenes featuring some of the stars, they only shot something if they were pretty confident it would make it into the final theatrical cut.

As a result, there's been eager interest in every set photo and missing trailer shot, with attentive viewers wondering just what deleted scenes they should expect with the film's home release. Recently, one set of images has generated a massive amount of interest online, because it apparently shows Captain Marvel in a scene shot on the Vormir set. At face value, it appears to indicate Marvel shot an alternate version of the film in which Captain Marvel participated in Avengers: Endgame's time travel mission, and helped retrieve the Soul Stone.

The truth, however, is rather more prosaic. Avengers: Endgame was shot before Captain Marvel, and as a result, Brie Larson's first costume tests were performed on sets for the team-up sequel. "We had the first full costume fitting with Brie Larson on the set of Avengers: Endgame," Kevin Feige explained "Captain Marvel The Official Movie Special" tie-in book. "Just stepping into the little tent on set where we hide - because we don't want many people to see - it was astounding." According to Feige, then, Captain Marvel's costume fitting was conducted on a random, secluded Avengers: Endgame set during this leg of filming. That's clearly what the Vormir images - which come from the Captain Marvel home video release - are showing.

Captain Marvel on Vormir

While the explanation makes it obvious, there's an understandable reason for the confusion. Larson is sporting her longer Avengers: Endgame hair from before the time jump (indicating the costume test and the Vormir sequences were shot in the second leg of Avengers filming) while wearing a costume from the 1990s solo movie, in a location the Avengers only visited five years after Thanos' snap. That's a Captain Marvel of three different time periods.

In fact, these images highlight those aforementioned restrictions in Marvel's production schedule incredibly well. Avengers: Endgame was filming while the script of Captain Marvel was still in the works. That's why Captain Marvel didn't get many scenes in Avengers: Endgame, and the ones she did get weren't exactly character moments. Marvel was still nailing down Carol Danvers' backstory, powerset, and even the basics of her portrayal. She wasn't yet sufficiently well-defined as a character to play a more important part in Avengers: Endgame.

The reality is that there was never going to be a version of Avengers: Endgame where Captain Marvel participated in those time travel missions. Endgame was intended as the Last Hurrah for the OG Avengers, which explains why they all survived the snap. Furthermore, Captain Marvel would have been completely out of place on Vormir; she had absolutely no emotional connections to the rest of the team, meaning there was no sacrifice she could possibly make for the Soul Stone.
