Why didn’t Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) use EDITH to aid him in the final battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame? Toward the end of the movie, the Avengers engaged Thanos and his army in a climactic battle to determine the fate of the universe. At the beginning of the fight, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Iron Man teamed up in an intense battle with Thanos. Iron Man was badly injured in the fight.

Iron Man had a lot of weapons in his arsenal, but one tool he didn’t use was EDITH. Introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home, EDITH was an advanced A.I. invented by Tony Stark that gives the person who owns it control over a network of Stark satellites. Through EDITH, drones can be called down to eliminate specific targets. Iron Man posthumously gave EDITH to Spider-Man (Tom Holland), believing that he would use it responsibly. EDITH was the most important plot device in the film, since it was because of EDITH that Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) tried to befriend him, and such a powerful weapon would have allowed him to cause a great deal of destruction and chaos.

Some have wondered why Iron Man didn’t use EDITH during the fight with Thanos. Even though it didn’t debut until Spider-Man: Far From Home, Iron Man had already invented it, so it should have been available. Iron Man didn’t have EDITH on him, which is made obvious by the fact that he wasn’t wearing the glasses because at this point he had already made arrangements for Peter to get it. Peter would have been dead when Stark decided to leave it for him, but he believed that if their plan was successful, they’d be able to restore the people Thanos killed.

Stark presumably left EDITH for Peter when he prepared his farewell video message. This happened before they went back in time to retrieve the Infinity Stones. After they returned, they were immediately followed by Thanos and his army, which means that Stark had no chance to go back for the glasses.

However, not bringing in EDITH for Endgame’s final battle may not have been a mistake or even an oversight. It’s important to take into consideration that regardless of how dangerous Spider-Man: Far From Home built it up to be, EDITH would have amounted to no more than a drop in the bucket in terms of their battle strategy against Thanos. At most, it would only have made a difference against some of his minions. Thanos effortlessly beat Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War and shrugged off devastating blows from Thor and a Mjolnir-wielding Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. These characters were clearly capable of hurting Thanos, but weren’t powerful enough to bring him down, despite their overwhelming numbers. If the combined forces of the Avengers couldn’t do the trick, it’s hard to imagine Stark’s drones making much of a dent, either.
