The Avengers: Endgame Honest Trailer pokes fun at the film's time travel, but praises it for being a satisfying conclusion to "a global nerd franchise". After twenty-one movies released over the course of eleven years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought its Infinity Saga to a near-close with this year's Avengers: Infinity War sequel and Phase 3 climax, Endgame. Altogether, the film was a huge success for Marvel Studios that earned strong reviews and - with a little help from its theatrical re-release - ultimately surpassed Avatar for the all-time unadjusted global box office record.
Marvel has since officially revealed its Phase 4 MCU movie and Disney Plus TV series lineup at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, along with a few unexpected announcements (like the news that Mahershala Ali will play Blade in a Phase 5 movie). But of course, just because the studio is ready to move on past Endgame doesn't mean that fans are done talking about the film just yet. And there's definitely a whole lot to discuss, as the movie's newly-unveiled Honest Trailer reminds everyone.
Screen Junkies has now released its Endgame Honest Trailer online, having already tackled the twenty-one MCU movies that led to it in a previous video. You can check it out in the space below.
The Endgame Honest Trailer, much like the public at large, pokes good-natured fun at everything from the movie's confounding attempts to explain its time travel rules (something even the film's writers and directors can't seem to agree on) to its clear setup for upcoming MCU Phase 4 films and Disney Plus TV shows involving characters like Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and Hawkeye. At the same time, it raises some deeper and more meaningful criticisms of the movie, including the way it combines fat jokes with an exploration of Thor's PTSD that has otherwise resonated with people or kills off Black Widow to serve her male counterparts' character arcs. And of course, it wouldn't be proper if the Honest Trailer didn't bring up the infamous "Thanus" fan theory at some point (which it does).
All the same, the video acknowledges that it's something of a miracle that Endgame - flaws and all - managed to deliver a satisfying finale to the Infinity Saga, and wasn't heavily critiqued the way that other popular nerd franchises have been of late (sorry, Game of Thrones). Disney may have no choice but to keep on topping itself from this point (it's their own fault, as pointed out here), but their MCU brand is still going strong and Phase 4 is already shaping up to be a fairly creatively ambitious one. It might even make up a bit for Natasha Romanoff's inglorious demise in Endgame, thanks to next year's long-awaited Black Widow solo adventure.
