New concept art reveals original plans for Avengers: Endgame's final battle. Five years after they lost to Thanos, the remaining heroes banded back together in the hopes of undoing the snap. While they successfully brought back those who perished from the random genocide, a version of the Mad Titan from a different reality made its way to the primary MCU timeline, threatening to wipe out the whole universe. This resulted in the franchise's biggest and most complex fight sequence thus far.

Initially, only Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America went up against the younger and more ruthless Thanos. However, with all their allies back from the dead thanks to Smart Hulk's reverse snap, they eventually get the back-up they badly needed. With so many characters with different abilities involved not only fighting Thanos but his army of creatures, not to mention members of the Black Order, the filmmakers had to do some serious planning to ensure that they're able to come up with a cohesive action set piece for Endgame. This all started with the creation of illustrations that would inspire the actual scene.

Shared on Instagram by production designer Ryan Lang is the illustration he created for Endgame's final battle early on. The artwork features several MCU heroes, albeit not everyone who ended up on the final version of the scene of the big screen, fighting Thanos and his minions. It also gives an idea of how massive battle was originally envisioned. Check it out below:

The original Avengers are front and center in this illustration, meaning Marvel Studios had decided early on that all six of them will survive Avengers: Infinity War and come back for Endgame. However, Black Widow and Hulk are noticeably absent from the battle and it makes sense considering where they were in their respective journeys in the MCU at that point. Black Widow died in Vormir and didn't have the chance to partake in the final battle. Meanwhile, Hulk was in his Smart Hulk persona which might be something that the filmmakers attempted to keep a lid on until the very last minute, hence why Lang doesn't have him here. Captain Marvel also interestingly is nowhere to be found probably because there's no concrete plan yet for her introduction. It's worth noting, however, that there's a scribble of a creature in-between Iron Man and Cull Obsidian which could be her or anyone else who has the ability to fly in the MCU.

It's no secret that the Avengers: Endgame's climactic battle and the immediate events preceding it went through several changes. At one point, they didn't have the portals scene which would've been a massive mistake. They also planned a brief scene with most heroes trapped in a ditch but ultimately ended up scrapping it. What's clear from this concept art, however, is that the complicated action sequence was always going to take place on the Avengers HQ ground as evidenced by the Avengers logo lying in the rubble.
