Chris Hemsworth, star of Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame, reveals he fought to keep fat Thor from reverting to his original body type in the middle of the film. With the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel effectively brought the first 10 years of its Marvel Cinematic Universe to a narrative close. The film sees the original six Avengers unite in order to undo Thanos' snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, which eliminated half of all life in the universe. In the Avengers: Endgame ending, Earth's Mightiest Heroes manage to bring their fallen friends back and everyone unites against Thanos and his army.
Since the movie's release, fans have talked about all aspects of Marvel Studios' epic, from Captain America's ending to the time travel used in Avengers: Endgame. One such aspect that's been discussed is Thor's weight gain as a result of his guilt over being unable to kill Thanos before he snapped his fingers. While some have criticized the Avengers: Endgame filmmakers for reducing Thor's weight to a punchline on many occasions in the movie, others have felt empowered by the fact that Thor is still worthy of wielding Mjolnir after his weight gain. Thor remains fat throughout Avengers: Endgame, but it turns out that wasn't the original plan for the God of Thunder.
In a new Variety profile, Hemsworth spoke about Thor's emotional and physical arc in Avengers: Endgame. Variety reports that Thor was meant to revert to his old self at some point in the middle of Endgame, but didn't because Hemsworth fought to keep Thor's new look. He said, "I enjoyed that version of Thor. It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own." Hemsworth continued, speaking about the time spent putting on the prosthetics of his Endgame Thor costume, and revealing how he was treated on set, saying, "People just kept coming up and cuddling me like a big bear or rubbing my belly like I was pregnant."
As it stands, Avengers: Endgame leaves Thor as the new version of the God of Thunder, which Hemsworth calls Lebowski Thor (a reference to Jeff Bridges character in The Big Lebowski, of course), and jetting off with the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's unclear if Hemsworth with appear as Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 or if he'll part ways with the team off-screen, but the actor is more than happy to keep playing the God of Thunder. Of doing more Thor movies, Hemsworth said,
“I’d still love to do more, to be honest. And I don’t know what the plan is. I feel like we’ve opened up such a different character. I feel more energized for the possibility of where it could go.”
Considering how many fans were empowered by seeing Thor being a worthy and butt-kicking fat superhero in Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth was undoubtedly right to fight to keep the God of Thunder's new look throughout the entire movie. While some of the film's empowerment may be undermined by how often the script uses Thor's weight as a joke, having the character return in future movies allows for more thorough exploration of his emotional arc. By the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor has gotten some of his confidence as a hero back, but it's fair to say he isn't entirely healed from the trauma of his losses in Thor: The Dark World , Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War. Perhaps Marvel Studios will continue to expand this Avengers: Endgame storyline with Thor's future in the MCU, whether in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and/or Thor 4.
