Mark Ruffalo Claims He Shot Five Avengers: Endgame Endings

Avengers Endgame Trailer - Bruce Banner

Bruce Banner/the Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo says he filmed five different endings for Avengers: Endgame. Crowned by Fandango as the most anticipated film of 2019, the upcoming Marvel Studios event film will wrap up the 22-film arc that it has been treading since 2008's Iron Man. Details are still scant with regard to its plot, but fans are excited to see how the movie plays out considering the tragic ending of Avengers: Infinity War.

Following Thanos' deadly snap that wiped out half of life in the universe, Endgame will tackle the aftermath of The Decimation and will shift the focus to the remaining heroes as they deal with their first real loss at the hands of the Mad Titan. Marketing for the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed blockbuster is measured, but the trailers have shown the public how desolate some of the characters are after the death of some of their own friends. As the original Earth's Mightiest Heroes reassemble, this time, with Ant-Man and Captain Marvel joining the gang, they hatch a new plan to ensure that the Mad Titan pays for his wrongdoings. While that means potentially restoring peace and order in the universe, it may also spell the end for some of the beloved characters in the MCU.

Considering the secretive nature of Endgame, fans have discussed how the movie wrap up repeatedly since the release of Infinity War. And as it turns out, the cast shot several different endings, at least according to Ruffalo. In an interview with E! News while doing the press rounds for the Phase 3 capper with Chris Evans and Karen Gillan, the actor reveals that he filmed "five different endings to this movie." "I didn’t even get a whole script of this movie. I don’t know why. The script I did get had dummy scenes in it. He [pointing to Chris Evans] gets married in this," he added.

Ruffalo (and Tom Holland) has a reputation for having loose lips when it comes to film spoilers, so it's hard to gauge whether or not he's joking with his latest statement. Fans know that Ruffalo was on the last day of principal photography for Endgame January of last year thanks to leaked set photos. But the cast and crew returned on set back in September and even earlier this year for additional shooting.

It's not an uncommon practice for secretive projects like the Marvel blockbuster to shoot a variation of endings to preserve the secrecy of the movie. They handed fake and/or unfinished Avengers 3 scripts so as keep the movie's plot tightly under wraps. And with Endgame supposedly having more spoilers than its predecessor, it makes sense that they'll go the greater lengths to protect the movie's story from spoiled. At one point, they even contemplated on not doing any traditional promos for the project - proof of how much they're willing to go just to ensure that nothing in it leaks before its debut. However, when confronted about the executing the said scheme for Infinity War, the Russos claimed  they're "too tired" to film fake scenes, and since they shot the twin Avengers sequels back-to-back, their claim has merit.

Whether or not Avengers: Endgame shot alternate endings doesn't really matter on the grand scheme of things. At the end of the day, what's most important is the one that makes it in the movie's theatrical cut and whether or not it's a satisfying conclusion to this long narrative arc. It's an understatement to say that there's a lot riding on how this movie pans out, especially given the reception Infinity War got last year.
