Seeing Old Captain America in Avengers: Endgame made Chris Evans' mother cry. In the lead up to Endgame, fans were wondering exactly how the MCU film would wrap up Steve Rogers' journey, since Evans' contract was up and the mega-franchise was looking to move beyond its original heroes. A large portion of fans predicted that Steve would die in the final battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin), but the Star-Spangled Man With a Plan once again defied expectations and lived to the end. The final moments of Endgame reveal Steve opted to travel back to the 1940's to live out his dream life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Now an old man, Steve returned to the present day to pass his shield on to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).

Fans might be sad to lose him, but Evans' post-MCU career looks bright. He most recently appeared in the crowd-pleasing whodunit Knives Out as the spoiled Ransom Drysdale and will next be seen in Apple TV+'s miniseries Defending JacobBeyond that, Evans is in talks to star in Little Shop of Horrors alongside Taron Egerton and fellow MCU co-star Scarlett Johansson, and is also attached to director Scott Derrickson's next project.

In a profile with Esquire to promote Defending Jacob, it was revealed that Evans' mom "burst into tears." when she saw him in full makeup as Old Cap. The reason? "He resembled his late granddad exactly." According to the profile, his maternal grandfather Andrew Capuano headed up the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. So if anyone is curious about what he looks like, apparently one just needs to rewatch the end of Endgame.

Chris Evans as old Captain America in Avengers: Endgame

Steve's ending proved to be a bit controversial among fans, mainly due to confusion over the logistics. Some fans took issue with the fact that Steve left behind his friends in the present (specifically Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan)) and wondered if that meant Steve was Peggy's mysterious husband all along. Others thought Steve's reunion with Peggy was heartwarming and an indication that Steve created a new timeline separate from the one that houses the previous events of the MCU. Endgame's writers and directors have done little to clear up this confusion.

Regardless of how it was received, Old Steve's presence was intended to cap off Steve's journey in a fitting and poignant way. Steve had always missed the past he left behind when he plunged into the ice, and Endgame attempted to rectify that. While it was a messier ending than some had hoped, it at least brought Evans' mom to tears, if for slightly different reasons.
