A new piece of Avengers: Endgame fan art shows what it could have looked like if Captain America did the snap instead of Iron Man. The fourth Avengers film was a massive success for Disney and Marvel Studios, with the film even surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. Despite the film being released back in April, fans never really stopped talking about the climactic ending or stopped making fan art.

The ending of Avengers: Endgame not only had a giant battle between dozens of superheroes and Thanos' army, but it also finished several character's story arcs. In order to defeat Thanos, Tony Stark sacrificed himself and performed a snap to destroy Thanos and his army. In the aftermath of the battle, Steve Rogers traveled back in time to return each of the Infinity Stones to their rightful places in history, but then stayed in the past and grew old with his true love: Peggy Carter. The ending was widely accepted by fans, but what if Steve was the one to do the snap?

A new piece of fan art from ellejart shows Captain America wielding the Nano Gauntlet that Tony built to finish Thanos. Cap is also holding his shield that Thanos had broken earlier in the movie as he prepares to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Nikolay Mochkin's fan art can be seen below:

While Avengers: Endgame was the end of Captain America and Iron Man's journey in the MCU, Disney isn't anywhere close to calling it quits on their lucrative franchise. At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced several Phase 4 movies, while also revealing that the X-Men would soon be joining the MCU and that a new Fantastic Four movie was being developed. Marvel further teased plans for Phase 5, with Mahershala Ali being cast as Blade and the news that sequels for Captain MarvelBlack Pantherand Guardians of the Galaxy were all in varying stages of development.

There has been plenty of fan art depicting what these future movies may look like, but this artwork for Endgame imagines a drastic difference to the end of the film. Iron Man started the MCU back in 2008 and by having Tony snap his fingers, he effectively put an end to the Infinity Saga. Having Cap perform the Snap could have spared Tony's life, but it ultimately would have taken a lot of the emotion away from Tony's character arc. It's also possible that Cap could have survived the snap, but then wouldn't have been strong enough to return the Infinity Stones. In the end, most people would agree that Avengers: Endgame had a satisfying ending, but fan art like this is still intriguing nonetheless.
