Viewers were expecting Avengers: Endgame to bring together all heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to fight Thanos, but something they didn’t see coming was a fight scene between Captain America and his 2012 self – and here’s how that scene was filmed. After Thanos managed to get all the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet, he fulfilled his goal of wiping out half of life in the universe, and with that many superheroes vanished, such as Black Panther, Falcon, and Spider-Man.

Avengers: Endgame saw the surviving heroes joining forces to go on a time heist to collect the Infinity Stones from different points in time and reverse the snap. In order to cover as much ground as possible, the team split up: the Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America, and Iron Man traveled to New York City in 2012 (and later Cap and Iron Man to 1970), Rocket Raccoon and Thor to Asgard in 2013, Hawkeye and Black Widow to Vormir in 2014, and Nebula and War Machine to Morag in 2014. The first group arrived during the Battle of New York, and their purpose was to retrieve the scepter and the Tesseract, but it wasn’t an easy mission.

In the process, Loki escaped and Captain America came across with his 2012 self, who thought he was Loki in disguise as he had the scepter. Both Captain Americas fought each other in one of the most memorable scenes from Avengers: Endgame, but how did the team behind the film achieve a fight like that?

Avengers: Endgame’s Cap vs Cap Fight Scene Was CGI & Practical

Cap fights his past self in Avengers Endgame

One of the most criticized aspects about Avengers: Endgame was how much it relied on CGI (and how evident in was in some scenes), and the Cap vs Cap fight was no exception, though it also had its dose of practical effects. Visual effects supervisor Dan DeLeeuw talked about the process of shooting the fight in a Marvel Entertainment video, explaining it was shot with two stunt performers and then Chris Evans shot both sides of the fight. Thanks to Lola VFX, they were able to shoot with three cameras from the general angle, and from that they took the best one and put Evans’ head and face on the stunt double – which was a whole process on itself as an actor’s face doesn’t always fit that of the stunt double.

The scene was originally shot with both Captain Americas without a helmet, but test audiences were confused over which Captain America was which, though the 2012 one had a cut on his face from the Battle of New York. Like many other scenes from the film, this was mostly CGI, but Chris Evans and the stunt doubles did a big part of the job as well. Extraction director Sam Hargrave shared that he and his brother, Daniel Hargrave, were in charge of the stunts for the scene, and it was a one-of-a-kind experience getting to fight his brother while wearing the Captain America costume (which he had already worn as he was Evans’ stunt double on The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier). The result was one of the most exciting scenes in Avengers: Endgame, with an impressive background made by digital designers, carefully planned angles, and a very well choreographed fight.
