Avengers: Endgame is close to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, as it needs to earn just under $100 million more to have made more money than Avatar at the box office.

Avatar has been the highest-grossing film of all time since 2009, where it pulled in a worldwide gross of $2,697,553,784 and became the first movie to make over two billion dollars at the box office. Avatar stole the top spot away from Titanicwhich was the highest-grossing film for twelve years before then. Avengers: Infinity War was believed to be one of the films that could beat Avatar at the box office, but it only just broke the two billion dollar mark. The incredible reception to Avengers: Infinity War, coupled with its cliffhanger ending, led many to believe that Avengers: Endgame could succeed where its predecessor failed and topple Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

It seems that Avengers: Endgame is close to taking Avatar's place, as ComicBook.com is reporting that the movie is around $92 million dollars away from becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. Avengers: Endgame has already passed Avatar at the domestic box office, but it still has work to do in the international box office if it wants to make more money overall.

Marvel fans have already begun a grassroots movement to try and push Avengers: Endgame over the finish line, with the #BeatAvatar hashtag being spread to help the movie, but the battle needs to be won in other territories in order for Avengers: Endgame to succeed. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is huge all around the world, so it's possible that the international Avengers fan will rally and help the movie beat Avatar at the box office.

Avengers: Endgame has the potential to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, but there is no guarantee that it will keep the spot for long. The Avatar franchise isn't going to take the defeat lying down, as there are several new Avatar movies in the works, with the first sequel coming in 2021. There is also the case of the Star Wars franchise to consider, as Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker also has the potential beat Avatar and Avengers: Endgame at the box office. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time, and a movie that undoes the controversial storyline decisions made in Star Wars: The Last Jedi might be enough to bring the audience back in droves.
