Directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed they never considered any other hero to deliver Captain America's "Avengers Assemble" line in Avengers: Endgame. With writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the filmmakers closed out MCU's Infinity Saga last year with the epic blockbuster. The film featured the biggest action set piece in the franchise thus far with several key moments, including Steve Rogers finally saying his iconic battle cry.

Picking up after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame was a slow-burner, making use of its 3-hour-runtime. It took its time setting up the time heist and final climactic battle between almost every hero in the universe and Thanos and his minions. Later in the fight, Smart Hulk's snap effectively brings back those who were snuffed out of existence via the Decimation five years prior, and the main three founding Avengers get some much-needed back-up. The moment allowed for Captain America to finally deliver a call to arms, saying, "Avengers Assemble."

The Russo Brothers told ComicBookMovie they never contemplated giving the iconic Marvel line to any hero other than Steve in Endgame. The filmmakers said they're set on him delivering it from the get-go, explaining that it was always going to be his moment.

Anthony: No!

Joe: We really didn't. We always felt like it needed to be Cap's moment, and I'm not sure why, but for us, we always thought it was going to be Cap's moment.

Anthony: I don't ever remember a moment where we ever talked about it being anything other than Cap's moment. Cap was always a special guide for us through the storytelling because he was the access point to the MCU for us. So, we do certainly look to and rely upon that character for a lot of the important parts of the narrative for sure.

The Russos began their MCU journey with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so their soft spot for the character makes sense. That said, "Avengers Assemble" is a line straight from the pages of Marvel Comics, and had been teased by Marvel Studios before Endgame. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, while gathering the new crop of Earth's Mightiest Heroes at the Avengers HQ, he almost delivered the line, but the scene ends before he can say "assemble."

Marvel Studios had been building up to Cap's "Avengers Assemble" line for nearly a decade, so it was unlikely anyone other than Captain America would deliver it in Avengers: Endgame. While he shared the leadership role with Iron Man throughout their stint in the franchise, even Tony Stark let Steve call the shots when they're out on missions, admitting that at the end of the day, it's the Super Soldier's decision. So, in hindsight, even the Russos wanted to have someone else say the line, Captain America is definitively the best character to deliver it.
