There will not be an Avengers movie during Marvel’s Phase 5, but there are movies leading up to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in which Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, old and new, can appear in cameos or supporting roles. After an entire Phase 4 without an Avengers story, Marvel Studios confirmed that the now-called Multiverse Saga will play quite differently from the Infinity Saga, with the only two Avengers movies in this new era and both dropping in 2025 as part of Phase 6.

Despite the lack of an Avengers movie, Marvel has kept its tradition of Avengers cameos and setups throughout its releases. The Disney+ Marvel TV shows, which only came to be during Phase 4, made it even easier for the franchise to keep its cameos tradition. Few are the MCU movies and shows that are limited to one character only, with Moon Knight being a notable and rare example of a true standalone Marvel story.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the first of the 2022 MCU movies, was yet another example of how solo stories are becoming rarer and rarer in the MCU – as the franchise has grown too big and interconnected. Thor: Love and Thunder was a more self-contained story, and yet the first few minutes of the movie were dedicated to Thor’s adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy. At this point, it is hard to imagine upcoming MCU movies and shows being as standalone as Moon Knight was, meaning audiences can expect cameos and team-ups throughout Marvel’s Phase 5.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Okoye would be the mcus best new black panther not shuri

While it is not exactly a crossover, Dora Milaje leader Okoye is officially an Avenger following the events of Avengers: Endgame – and she will now return in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Okoye took on a leadership role after Thanos’s snap, and she was later recruited by Natasha Romanoff to form the small team of Avengers that tried to keep the peace amidst the chaos of a post-snap world. Still, given how Wakanda Forever is already introducing Namor and Ironheat, it doesn’t seem like there will be room for any crossovers with other Avengers.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Kathryn Newton alongside Ant-Man and The Wasp

Outside of Ant-Man and Wasp, the former of which has now finally become a famous Avengers following the events of Endgame, audiences may see a Young Avengers setup in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The third Ant-Man movie will bring back Cassie Lang, now played by Kathryn Newton, and the first pieces of promotional material suggest that the character will suit up. In the comics, Cassie Lang was part of the Young Avengers, and it is possible that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania somehow sets up the superhero team with cameos from characters like Kate Bishop and America Chavez. Cassie Lang's superhero origin was in a Young Avengers comic, so it would make sense for Marvel to use her superhero debut in the MCU as an introduction for the team.

The Marvels

Ms Marvel Captain Marvel team up the marvels

The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel, is already a crossover event of its own. The film will have three main characters – Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan – the “Marvel heroes" of the MCU. That said, The Marvels will also see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nicky Fury. Fury is now working with SWORD, the space-equivalent of SHIELD created by Maria Rambeau, so it makes sense that the character will be involved in The Marvels. In addition to Fury's confirmed role, Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in the MCU, is rumored to appear in The Marvels.

Blade

Details on the MCU’s Blade reboot have been kept under wraps, but after three successful Blade movies in the past, one way for the MCU to make its version distinct is by highlighting that this Blade exists in the same universe as other Marvel characters. Kit Harington's Black Knight will likely appear on Marvel’s Blade, although that Black Knight is still not an Avenger in the MCU. That said, one possible Avenger crossover in Blade is to have Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, as a cameo. Vampires have yet to appear in the MCU, so it would make sense for the Sorcerer Supreme to step up once Blade starts to make a name for himself in this universe.

Captain America: New World Order

Captain america 4 risks undermining falcon and the winter soldier ending

Starting with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Captain America movies have featured large casts of Marvel characters that serve to raise the stakes of the story and show how impactful Captain America’s actions can be. This can now be brought into Captain America: New World Order, the first Captain America movie featuring Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, as the new Captain America. Following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it's likely that Bucky Barnes will be featured in Captain America: New World Order, even if in a limited capacity. Another possible appearance is by James Rhodes, the War Machine, who in the MCU serves as a link between the superheroes and the military and thus would fit into a story named New World Order.

Thunderbolts

While Thunderbolts will see Marvel villains and anti-heroes teaming up under Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Val, the events of the movie could draw the attention of the Avengers. Captain America Sam Wilson is a strong contender to appear in the film, considering that he already knows John Walker and that Thunderbolts premiers right after Captain America: New World Order. Hawkeye, whose future in the MCU following the Hawkeye series is still a mystery, would also fit into the Thunderbolts movie – as he has a connection with Yelena and has recently operated under a gray area himself.

Fantastic Four

Spider-Man Fantastic Four logo

When Jon Watts was attached to direct the MCU Fantastic Four reboot, many assumed that this would make a potential Spider-Man crossover easier to happen. However, even after Jon Watt’s exit from the film, a Spider-Man cameo in Fantastic Four would still make a lot of sense. Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four have been interacting since the very first issues of the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Spider-Man comic, and it would be a waste not to carry that into the MCU. There is still no announced project for Spider-Man in the MCU’s Phase 5 and 6, so a cameo in Fantastic Four, which premiers in 2024, would be an interesting way to keep the character around before Spider-Man 4.
