Although Captain America was one of the leaders in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s still a lot viewers don’t know about him – like why he was wearing Converse in The Avengers. Steve Rogers made his MCU debut in 2011 in Captain America: The First Avenger, and went on to appear in seven more films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he appears in public service announcements played at Peter’s school.

Captain America retired at the end of Avengers: Endgame when he went back in time to return the Infinity Stones to their respective times and places and decided to stay in the past to live the life he always wanted to next to Peggy Carter. Back in the present, he passed on the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon. Steve Rogers was one of the characters whose portrayal changed depending on the writers in charge, which has made way for many debates on who got him right and if the ending he got suited the character.

But all this time in the MCU wasn’t enough to cover all of Captain America’s life and character, and there are still a couple of things viewers don’t know about him. Some of these are little details that might seem irrelevant, but they actually add to the character, such as why he’s seen wearing Converse in The Avengers.

Why Captain America Wears Converse In The Avengers

The Avengers Steve Rogers Converse

Some fans have pointed out that, in The Avengers, in the scene where Steve is training and Nick Fury arrives to talk to him about the Tesseract, Steve is wearing Converse. It’s a detail that might not seem important, but as a Twitter user pointed out (via Reddit), there is a connection between that specific brand and Steve Rogers. The user explains that Converse has been around since 1908, and by 1947 they cost about $3. During World War II, Converse made footwear for soldiers, so Cap surely wore a pair or two back in the day. Given that he spent 70 years frozen underwater, once he joined the modern world, Converse shoes were one of the few things he could recognize from the old days.

Captain America, at least in the MCU, was shown to be a man of nostalgia, which is understandable given the time he spent “asleep” and everything he missed as consequence. As such, is not surprising that he would chose to wear Converse over any other (arguably more comfortable) type and brand of shoes just because it held a connection with his past. Whether the addition of Converse was intentional or not is unknown, but it fits Steve Rogers’ character and is a subtle but interesting detail.
