The Avengers are assembling for an epic battle across the multiverse with Mephisto and his Multiversal Masters of Evil. Jason Aaron's Avengers run has operated on a grander scale than ever before, setting up a conflict that transcends time and space. It kicked off with the shocking introduction of the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, a group that included Odin the All-Father and the first Phoenix host. Since then, it's expanded across time and space, introducing both forgotten heroes of the past and Avengers from alternate timelines.

But it has also brought the Avengers face to face with terrifying new threats. It's now clear Mephisto, Marvel's version of the devil, has been hatching a plan to conquer the multiverse itself. He's assembled the Multiversal Masters of Evil, who are destroying Avengers in countless different timelines. They're currently launching attacks on the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, and if they succeed in destroying them, all history will be changed. It's setting up an epic collision that will decide the fate of the multiverse itself.

Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at San Diego Comic-Con revealed the final war between Mephisto's forces and the Avengers will begin in November 2022 in the "Avengers Assemble" event. This will launch with a one-shot, Avengers Assemble Alpha, by Jason Aaron and Bryan Hitch. According to Marvel, this will unite the current Avengers team, the multiversal superhero army of Avengers Forever, and the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC in an epic saga forming the capstone to Aaron's five-year run. Marvel released an official synopsis teasing a war through time:

From throughout time and the far corners of the Multiverse, the Mightiest Heroes of All the Earths are assembling as never before for a battle beyond all imaging. A war that will take us from the prehistoric beginnings of an Earth under assault by the greatest villains who’ve ever lived to the watchtower that stands at the dark heart of the all and the always, where an army of unprecedented evil now rises. The biggest Avengers saga in Marvel history begins now.

The event's title is an appropriate one given this story promises to be the comic-book-equivalent of Avengers: Endgame's portals scene - but featuring even more characters. The reference to the watchtower standing "at the dark heart of the all and the always" is particularly intriguing, because it promises to be a location that will be key to future multiversal adventures in the Marvel Comics universe. Currently, this tower is the base of the heroic Deathlok army's attempts to safeguard time, suggesting their death or defeat may presage the beginning of the Avengers' multiversal war.

Marvel's description of this event as the "capstone" of Aaron's run indicates the writer's time with the Avengers is coming to an end. Given that's the case, it's reasonable to assume this multiversal adventure will wrap up some of the major arcs Aaron has been exploring - most notably the mysterious relationship between Thor and the Phoenix Force. Aaron has a good history with event comics - he was responsible for the tremendous "War of the Realms" - so hopefully his Avengers run will end with a bang.
