A lot of information was shared yesterday when Disney lifted the embargo on The Avengers set visits. We didn't visit the set ourselves but we did round up all of the important bits of information learned from the two-day event, which included interviews with most of the principal cast.
Standing alongside the titular heroes Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye all throughout Marvel Studios' series of films is S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization led by Nick Fury which is in charge of The Avengers initiative. One key player integral to recruiting and supervising the heroes is fan-favorite Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and as such, he gets to star in his own movie poster.
Agent Phil Coulson is a character who - unlike the rest of the cast - originated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not the comic books. He's an operative of S.H.I.E.L.D. who first appeared in Iron Man in a minor role, then later exploded as a face for the franchise and Marvel's marketing efforts.
Clark Gregg's performance as Coulson and the fan response earned him a multi-picture contract with Marvel Studios, bringing back the character for key parts in Iron Man 2, Thor and this summer for The Avengers (Marvel's biggest movie to date), where Clark Gregg says he'll have a prominent role and some cool action scenes.
He's also featured in the viral marketing campaign for SHIELD and starred in the Marvel one-shots, while also making appearances in the comics, including Ultimate Spider-Man. We can now also add cool poster to his list of Agent Coulson's appearances, as shared by Clark Gregg himself over Twitter:
Good on Marvel for giving Coulson (and Gregg) his due. I wouldn't want to be the target of that stink eye. Be sure to check out the rest of The Avengers character posters.
The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon, opening in theaters on May 4, 2012.
