Since Avengers: Endgame is well on the way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, even though it might not quite clinch the title from Avatar, it might seem like a no-brainer for Marvel to make more Avengers movies. However, it’s a little bit more complicated than that.

Endgame gave fans a very solid ending to the epic superhero saga that began with 2012’s The Avengers, and the Avengers team we started with looks very different now. Still, a fifth Avengers movie would make some Disney executives a lot richer. So, here are 5 Reasons Avengers 5 Will Never Happen (And 5 Why It Definitely Will).

It’ll never happen: The Avengers have disbanded

Avengers Endgame Russo

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, the titular superhero team decided to cease operations following their greatest battle yet. With Tony Stark dead and Steve Rogers in his twilight years, the Avengers disbanded.

There are still plenty of teams in the MCU keeping people safe – the Wakandan Army, the Masters of the Mystic Arts, the New Asgardians, the Guardians of the Galaxy etc. – and the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are on their way, so the world of the MCU doesn’t necessarily need the Avengers anymore. How can there be a fifth Avengers movie if there are no Avengers anymore?

It definitely will: It would make a ton of money

Thor with Rocket and Groot

The first and second Avengers films cracked $1 billion at the worldwide box office, while the third and fourth ones cracked $2 billion. The latest one, Endgame, is on track to become the highest grossing movie of all time. The last time a movie broke that record, the studio behind it commissioned not one, not two, but four sequels to follow it.

To break that record – and with the fourth installment of a franchise that has seen steady growth at the box office with each movie, no less – and not follow it up with a sequel seems like an unwise business decision.

It’ll never happen: Nothing could top the double-whammy of Infinity War and Endgame

The reason why each Avengers film has been more successful than the last (except for Age of Ultron, which was the lowest-grossing installment in the franchise) is that each one has been bigger and better than its predecessor. This is why Age of Ultron failed to top the 2012 original – it didn’t have a suitably bigger scale.

But Infinity War brought in all the other heroes and delivered a jaw-dropping ending where the villain won. So, audiences went into Endgame with no idea what would happen, rooting for the heroes more than ever before. There’s no way Avengers 5 could top that.

It definitely will: Everyone loves the Avengers movies

The Avengers movies are the movies that every comic book fan has been waiting to see since they were a kid. All these heroes that they never thought would share the screen – or even reach the screen in the first place – have been fighting alongside each other in spectacular battle sequences and it’s been a phenomenal cinematic ride.

There’s more hype surrounding an Avengers movie than, perhaps, a movie from any other franchise. People get excited about a new Star Wars movie or a new James Bond movie or a new Fast & Furious movie, but not as excited as they get for an Avengers movie.

It’ll never happen: The Avengers will be replaced by another team

Maybe the Avengers as we know them are well and truly dead. The team is finished and all the characters are moving on. But that doesn’t mean the end of ensemble team-up movies in the MCU. There are plenty of teams in the Marvel universe outside the Avengers that could lead a big Avengers-style team-up movie.

Fans have been clamoring for an all-female A-Force movie, while the X-Men are due to join the franchise in the coming years. Plus, with the likes of Kate Bishop and Riri Williams reportedly making their MCU debuts soon, the Young Avengers seem like a prime candidate as the successor to the Avengers.

It definitely will: New characters will need to be integrated into the wider universe

With Marvel Studios planning to introduce Shang-Chi and the Eternals into the MCU in the next couple of years – with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four joining at some point, too – it will need an Avengers 5 just to integrate them all into the franchise’s wider universe.

This can happen in other characters’ solo movies, like introducing Namor in a Black Panther sequel, but they don’t become fully ingratiated into the universe until they tear through a warship like Captain Marvel or hitch a ride to Titan on a Q-Ship like Spider-Man. That’s why we need Avengers movies in the MCU.

It’ll never happen: The Avengers ‘trilogy’ is complete

The Avengers together and looking up among the wreck in 2012's The Avengers.

Kevin Feige, the producer and mastermind behind the MCU, is a big advocate for trilogies as a cinematic storytelling technique. He stopped after three Captain America movies, three Iron Man movies, three Thor movies (for now), and he even gave the Hulk a trilogy hidden in three non-Hulk movies.

The Avengers movies act as a sort of trilogy, even though there are four of them, because Infinity War and Endgame are basically a two-parter (even if the titles were changed not to suggest this). So, by Feige’s own rules, this would be the perfect place to stop making Avengers movies.

It definitely will: There are some threats that no one can handle alone

The whole point of the Avengers movies is to bring a bunch of MCU heroes together to take on a threat that none of them could handle alone. A villain like the Vulture doesn’t require the efforts of the entire Avengers roster to be defeated and could be handled by Spider-Man alone.

But a villain like Thanos couldn’t be defeated by just one of the Avengers. All of them were needed to defeat him (and even then, they failed the first time). There are some Marvel villains – e.g. Galactus, Doctor Doom, Kang the Conqueror – that would require all of Earth’s mightiest heroes to take them down.

It’ll never happen: Endgame was the perfect ending for the Avengers saga

While all the installments of the MCU tie into one grand narrative, the Avengers movies stand on their own as a four-part saga. These movies started in 2012 with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, and those six characters have been at the heart of each movie, no matter how huge or crowded they were, ever since.

All six of those characters got the perfect ending to their arcs in Avengers: Endgame. Right now, as it stands, we have a perfect four-movie Avengers saga. To pile more installments on top of it now would feel disingenuous and ruin that.

It definitely will: The Avengers movies are the glue holding the MCU together

Avengers Infinity War - Thor, Peter Quill, and Gamora talking

Ever since the heroes introduced in loosely connected origin stories converged in New York to fend off a Chitauri invasion, the Avengers movies have been the glue that holds the MCU together. All of the movies in this franchise are connected in some way, but the Avengers films are the ones that pull them all together and give us disparate characters like Ant-Man, Black Panther, and Nebula all in the same movie.

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers might be out of the picture, but we still need Avengers movies to anchor the MCU and team up characters from different worlds that we still want to see on-screen together.
