Simu Liu reacts to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton helming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. During Marvel Studios' 2019 San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel, Kevin Feige announced their post-Infinity Saga plans. That included the confirmation of the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings film that debuted Liu as the titular character with Cretton spearheading the project.

Three years since they first joined the franchise, both Liu and Cretton are set to play pivotal roles in the MCU's Multiverse Saga. Liu will continue his stint as Shang-Chi, which already includes a guaranteed Shang-Chi sequel, albeit without a release date. Meanwhile, Cretton is currently busy developing a Wonder Man series for Disney+, not to mention Shang-Chi 2, which will reunite him with Liu. In addition to that, he is about to be one of the most important filmmakers in this new era of Marvel Studios storytelling as he has been announced to direct Avengers 5, officially titled The Kang Dynasty.

News of Cretton directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty broke just a few days after Marvel Studios laid out their full Phase 5 slate and some projects for Phase 6 at  San Diego Comic-Con. In the event, Kevin Feige also confirmed that, despite rumors, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo will not return for Avengers 5 and its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. Some are curious why Cretton's new MCU gig wasn't announced at Hall H, but considering the sheer number of projects they already talked about, they may have opted to delay the announcement. For what it's worth, it's safe to say that the deal with the filmmaker has been decided on for quite a while already, and based on Liu's congratulatory message, he may have long known about it.

With two more MCU projects under its belt, it's curious which one Cretton is currently prioritizing. For context, Wonder Man has yet to get a release date on Disney+, nor has the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follow-up. Despite being confirmed for a while now, Feige didn't talk about either during Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation. In any case, it's possible that the Liu-starring sequel is slated for Phase 6 which has several unannounced projects. That allows the character to have two standalone adventures before joining the rest of the MCU in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
