The Russo Brothers are not directing MCU's Avengers 5 and Avengers: 6. Marvel Studios officially laid out their plans for the franchise's future during San Diego Comic-Con, where it was revealed that Phase 4, 5, and 6 will be called the Multiverse Saga.

MCU architect Kevin Feige once again spearheaded the presentation SDCC, and one of his most exciting announcements is the confirmation of the next two Avengers movies titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Since both films are part of Phase 6, the producer revealed nothing else about the projects other than their titles and release dates. Right now, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty takes MCU's prime summer slot on May 2, 2025, while Avengers: Secret Wars releases just a few months after on November 7, 2025. Since the films are just a few years away, however, there's already interest regarding who might direct them. While Feige isn't ready to announce that yet, he rules out two fan favorites from helming the project.

On the heels of Marvel Studios' Hall H panel, Feige talked to Deadline about Avengers: Endgame helmers Joe and Anthony Russo directing Avengers 5 and 6. The MCU architect definitively debunked rumors saying that the pair won't be working on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Watch his full answer below:

For context, the Russos have been vocal about wanting to helm MCU's Secret Wars adaptation. They have said this multiple times, but despite rumors of their Marvel Studios' return, they insisted that there are in talks with Feige and his team to direct it. In fact, before SDCC, the Russos squashed the idea that they will make a surprise appearance at Hall H for Avengers 5. Now, Feige backs up their claim, although, like the filmmakers, the producer admits that they want to work with them again. Considering what they were able to accomplish in the MCU, particularly with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it makes sense that the Russos are the default directors to helm MCU's next culminating event. It's worth noting, however, that a big part of their ability to stick the landing for the Infinity Saga is that they, alongside writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were integral in setting up those crossover films. Since the Russos aren't involved with any Phase 4 and Phase 5 projects, culminating the Multiverse Saga might be trickier for them.

In light of this, it's likely that whoever directs Avengers 5 and Avengers: 6 will be someone who is already involved in MCU's plans. Right now, there's still no returning filmmaker in Phase 4, although Michael Waldron has been involved in a couple of multiversal projects such as Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In any case, there's still MCU's full Phase 5 slate which could help in narrowing down the choice to whoever helms the next Avengers movies. The Russos weren't part of Phase 1, only entering the franchise in Phase 2's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and from there became the Infinity Saga's most influential filmmakers. So, it's possible that Feige's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars helmers are just about to join the universe.
