Avengers: Infinity War may have been the 10 year anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the multi-billion dollar franchise doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The series started back in 2008 with Iron Man, with the most recent film being Ant-Man and The Wasp. So far there have been 20 movies in the MCU, three of which being Avengers films.
The first movie focused on Thor’s brother Loki, the second on a villainous robot named Ultron, and the third on the mad Titan Thanos. While each film in the MCU seemed to introduce a new villain, Thanos is ultimately what each of the first 18 movies were leading in to. When the Avengers finally did battle Thanos, they not only lost the fight, but ended up losing half of humanity after Thanos merely snapped his fingers.
By collecting all six of the Infinity Stones, Thanos was one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy and left fans weeping as they left the theater. While Thanos was the clear victor in Infinity War, the heroes will once again be battling the purple giant in Avengers 4.
As Marvel usually does with their superhero movies, most details surrounding the film have been kept a secret, but there are still some things we know for sure, and others we are hoping to be true.
Here are the 15 Things We Know Will Happen In Avengers 4 (And 15 We Hope Do).
Many people are wondering what superheroes will show up in Avengers 4, but we know for sure that comic legend Stan Lee will have a cameo in the movie. Lee is the creator and co-creator of many iconic comic book characters that have since been adapted for the MCU, including Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man.
After Thor drove Stormbreaker through Thanos’ chest and the mad Titan snapped his fingers, half of the universe turned to dust. Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, was the first person to meet this fate in Avengers: Infinity War.
Although it was previously thought that actor Sebastian Stan would be returning for Avengers 4, that no longer seems to be a certainty. Stan recently commented that he isn’t sure if he is in Avengers 4 or not since the Russo brothers filmed some scenes for both Avengers 4 and Infinity War back to back.
There have been many fan theories surrounding Avengers 4, but a popular one seems to revolve around time travel. This summer, set photos from Avengers 4 seemed to support this theory by showing old and new heroes during the Battle of New York.
The set photos were significant because it not only revealed that the Avengers were going to be revisiting their battle against the Chitauri, but also showed Cap in his original uniform and Ant-Man alongside the original team. While the time travel theory hasn’t been confirmed yet, the set photos have confirmed that the team will be going back to the big city.
At the end of October, 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langford was cast in Avengers 4. While her role is still currently unknown, some people are theorizing that Langford might be playing Kate Bishop's Hawkeye. First appearing in the comic Young Avengers #1, Bishop was a pupil of a battle-weary Clint Barton.
Hawkeye may be returning for Avengers 4, but it would be interesting to see him mentor a younger character who could potentially take his place for future movies. As for now, fans can only speculate who Langford is playing and hope for the role of Kate Bishop.
Even if one wanted to go into Avengers 4 knowing nothing about the movie, it can be hard since casting information and future films’ release dates in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are readily available. While the ending of Infinity War was still sad, many people knew that most, if not all, of the characters would be resurrected in Avengers 4.
So far, Gamora, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Drax, Mantis, and Star-Lord have all been confirmed to be returning for Avengers 4. That being said, how the characters will come back to life is still a mystery.
Since Disney has bought out 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios now has access to several more iconic characters that they couldn’t previously use. Silver Surfer is one of these characters that we are hoping makes it into Avengers 4.
Being a cosmic entity, the Surfer could easily fit into the story of the fourth Avengers outing and lead the way for other superheroes such as the Fantastic Four. That being said, given the time frame of the Disney and Fox merger and the filming dates for Avengers 4, this seems incredibly unlikely. Here’s to wishful thinking.
Even though Pepper Potts hasn’t been in as many movies as Tony Stark, she has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning. She started off as a personal assistant to Stark before becoming one of his love interests. Pepper was last seen in Avengers: Infinity War as Tony’s fiancé.
The couple was discussing having a baby, before Tony was pulled away to fight the Black Order. Pepper seems to have survived Thanos’ snap, and according to set photos, the couple will get to reunite in Avengers 4.
Though out the characters journeys in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their costumes will often go through several different types of changes. This happens not only to keep the character looking fresh and interesting, but it also helps boost toy and merchandise sales.
For this reason, the characters will likely get upgraded suits in Avengers 4, but so far it hasn’t been confirmed. There have been some leaked artwork showing the team in sleek suits and toy packaging of the characters in white costumes, but as for now, these are purely speculation.
While many heroes will be returning from the grave, Loki will as well, in some capacity. Whether Loki comes back to life completely or is just seen in flashbacks is still up for debate, but actor Tom Hiddleston will for sure be in the movie.
The actor has been spotted in set photos for the recreation of the Battle of New York. Hiddleston will also be returning as Loki for a Disney Plus TV show, but that won’t necessarily take place after Avengers 4.
While we have seen several different Avengers handle one of the Infinity Stones, we haven’t yet seen anybody wield the Infinity Gauntlet besides Thanos. In the comic books, several people wielded the Gauntlet after Thanos, including Nebula and Adam Warlock, so hopefully someone besides Thanos will wield it in Avengers 4.
The person who wields all six Infinity Stones is one of the most powerful beings in the universe, so it would be interesting to see how another character would handle that amount of raw power. That being said, the Russo Brothers have confirmed Adam Warlock will not appear, so we can scratch him off our list.
Actor Chris Evans has publicly announced that Avengers 4 will be his last adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor made the announcement in 2014, but it became a reality this year since Avengers 4 is right around the corner.
Even though Cap was one of the lucky ones who survived Thanos’ snap, he may not make it out of another battle with Thanos alive. Filming his last scenes as Captain America was obviously emotional for Chris Evans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean his character will perish.
Ever since his role in Captain America: The First Avenger, people have been wondering what happened to Red Skull. Many people theorized that the character didn’t actually perish at the end of the film, but rather teleported to another world.
That theory was confirmed to be true in Avengers: Infinity War, when he was found guarding the Soul Stone on Vormir. Even though the character returned, many people would like to see him have a bigger role in Avengers 4, since he is now free to leave Vormir and hunt down Infinity Stones if he chooses to.
Aside from his solo movies, Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, has only appeared in Captain America: Civil War. In Civil War, Ant-Man had a limited role and was completely absent from Infinity War.
Even though Lang is currently trapped in the Quantum Realm, the writers on Avengers 4 have confirmed that Lang will have a bigger role in the next movie. Between this and the fact that Ant-Man has been spotted in set photos for the Battle of New York scene, fans know that he will have a bigger role this time around.
Big fans of Marvel comic books will recognize the name Jim Starlin. Starlin created several popular characters for Marvel, including Drax, Gamora, and Thanos. Reports started surfacing in May that another Starlin-created character would appear in Avengers 4, but Starlin was quick to shoot down these reports.
That being said, fans can still hope that Pip the Troll or even Thanos’ brother Eros will secretly make an appearance in Avengers 4. Starlin has created several other characters, but these two would certainly be among many people’s top choices, since they also appeared in the Infinity War and Infinity Gauntlet comic books.
To say that Avengers 4 will change the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a bit of an understatement. Avengers 4 will most definitely end the MCU as we know it. Not only are several actors unlikely to return for Phase 4, but the MCU will begin to deal with mainly cosmic storylines.
The first three phases have mainly dealt with the Infinity Stones storyline, but things will almost certainly change after Avengers 4. Needless to say, the Marvel Cinematic Universe won't ever be the same after Avengers 4 is released.
While Avengers 4 will most likely deal with time travel, it hasn’t been confirmed just yet. Ever since the set photos of old and new heroes revisiting the Battle of New York were released, fans have ran with the idea that Avengers 4 will be a time travel movie, and there is even more evidence that this is the case.
There are also reports that the film was casting for a ‘60s scene and will feature many “flashbacks.” While the movie could just feature flashbacks, it seems unlikely since the set photos clearly show different characters appearing in scenes that they weren’t previously involved with.
While Avengers 4 will be resurrecting characters that perished in Avengers: Infinity War, the movie will also bring back characters from older movies. Tilda Swinton appeared as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, and she has also been confirmed for Avengers 4.
The character played an incredibly important role in transforming Stephen Strange, so she will likely have something to do with the time travel element of Avengers 4, if that turns out to be the plot. That being said, actor Frank Grillo noted that Swinton had a “1 day availability,” so she may not have a very big role in the movie.
Since Disney has acquired the rights to several superheroes previously owned by 20th Century Fox, characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four can now appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While both teams are unlikely to appear in the actual movie, it would be spectacular to see the X-Men get introduced in the post-credits scene.
Since Avengers 4 is going to be the end of an era, featuring the X-Men in a credits scene could get people excited for their future appearance in the franchise.
In Avengers: Infinity War, the only weapon Thanos needed was his trusty Infinity Gauntlet, but in Avengers 4, he seems to be taking it up a notch. Not only will Thanos have new armor, but he will also be wielding a big sword.
While fans haven’t seen what kind of weaponry Carol Danvers will use in Captain Marvel, her weapon for Avengers 4 seems to have been revealed. An axe looking almost identical to Captain Marvel’s axe in the Fear Itself comic showed up on the Marvel News India Facebook page, although her weapon hasn’t been confirmed like Thanos.
Since Avengers 4 has been confirmed as the last movie with Chris Evans as Captain America, fan’s minds have started to run wild on how the character will be finished off. While Cap is unlikely to survive Avengers 4, some people have theorized that Cap will get a happy ending with his one true love: Peggy Carter.
Since Steve Rogers was frozen in ice, he never got to have that date with Peggy, but if the time travel theory turns out to be true, Cap could stay in Peggy’s time period and have one last dance.
Gwyneth Paltrow has not only been confirmed for Avengers 4, but she will also get to suit up in an Iron Man suit again. While the popular theory that Pepper would travel to Titan to rescue Tony turned out to not be true, it has been confirmed that Pepper will transform into her superhero role Rescue.
An image of Paltrow in purple and white armor surfaced online and unless this is some next level photoshop, Rescue will definitely be making her way to Avengers 4.
Brock Rumlow may have had a big role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but he wouldn’t transform into the villain Crossbones until the beginning of Captain America: Civil War. Even then, actor Frank Grillo didn’t have a very large role, but hopefully, he will return for Avengers 4.
Thanos was no doubt the big villain that had been teased since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He brought total destruction in Avengers: Infinity War, but he will be joined by another villain in Avengers 4. There are theories suggesting that Marvel might pull a big twist and not make Thanos the big villain of Avengers 4, or even team him up with the Avengers.
There is reason to believe this since Thanos joins forces with the Avengers in the comics, and since toy packaging reads, “The Asgardian Thor wields the mighty Stormbreaker in his battle against new foes," and "Rocket teams up with a new crew to guard the galaxy from an even greater threat.”
With Kevin Feige confirming the development of an Eternals movie, it makes sense that the beings would be introduced in Avengers 4. In the comics, the Eternals are described as “an offshoot of the evolutionary process” who end up creating sentient life on Earth. When Red Skull first addresses Thanos in Infinity War, he calls him the son of A’lars, which is a big hint at a future Eternals storyline.
While superheroes and supervillains will be making a comeback for Avengers 4, Nick Fury and Maria Hill will as well. The two were last seen in the post-credits scene for Avengers: Infinity War, as they turned to ashes.
Fury will be a main character in Captain Marvel, but since that movie takes place in 1995, that doesn’t confirm Fury’s return for present-day movies. That being said, Hill and Fury both appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which takes place after Avengers 4, meaning they have to be resurrected in the fourth Avengers.
Everyone who has read a Spider-Man comic, or watched a Spider-Man movie knows that Peter Parker is sort of a science geek. Parker is obviously incredibly smart, and he loves learning new information. One Avengers 4 theory suggests that Spider-Man may end up visiting Wakanda, which could be an incredible scene.
Peter loves technology, and seeing the vast resources and technology Wakanda has developed would not only give him a reason to geek out, but he could also make his suit even more advanced than it already is.
Since Ant-Man is currently trapped in the Quantum Realm and he is also featured in Avengers 4, fans know that the Quantum Realm will be at least featured in the movie. In an interview, Michal Douglas confirmed that Avengers 4 not only directly connects to Ant-Man and the Wasp, but that the Quantum Realm will be incredibly important.
Douglas elaborated by stating, “The Quantum Realm, that's the key. The Quantum Realm plays an important part in all the next chapters, I think, of the Marvel films.”
Around the time Quicksilver had been revealed for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Quicksilver had also been announced for X-Men: Days of Future Past. While people often argue that Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s version of the character looked more appealing, many will agree that Evan Peter's version of the character was better.
Quicksilver is still a main character in the X-Men movies, but he was quickly ended in the MCU during Age of Ultron. Since Avengers 4 might deal with time travel, the movie could easily bring back Quicksilver, or at least give him a better ending. That being said, Quicksilver apparently won’t appear in the film, but fans can still hope for it.
Many people often question Hawkeye’s worth since he is just a guy with some arrows, but he continued to prove his worth as the series went on. Hawkeye seemingly retired after Captain America: Civil War to spend more time with his family and didn’t make an appearance in Infinity War.
Jeremy Renner won’t just be returning for Avengers 4, but his character will be transforming into the character Ronin. In set photos for Avengers 4, Renner can be spotted in gear that is identical to Ronin’s, confirming that he will be transformed in Avengers 4.
Vision first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, after he was created using the Mind Stone. After Thanos rips the Mind Stone out of Vision’s head in Infinity War, the color drains from Vision’s body and he turns to gray and white.
This is important because in the comics, this is the color he turns after Hank Pym brings him back to life. Many superheroes will be resurrected in Avengers 4, but if Vision does return, he likely won’t be resurrected the same way as everyone else.
