A new licensing magazine has given the first synopsis for the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4, ominously teasing that "sacrifices must be made" in order to preserve reality itself.

The cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War left viewers reeling. Thanos had triumphed, and succeeded in his insane goal of "rebalancing the universe." With a snap of his fingers, the Mad Titan had snuffed out half the life in the universe. Marvel Studios has deliberately held back even the slightest hint as to what will happen next. They haven't even announced the film's official title yet, wary of distracting attention away from Infinity War. According to Kevin Feige, this approach has backfired, but the studio seems to be sticking with it for now.

But, with under a year until Avengers 4 hits theaters, it's no surprise that details are beginning to slip out. According to CBM's Rochi Shion, the latest issue of Licensing Magazine contains the first synopsis for Avengers 4.

"A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it."

Although Infinity War ended with Thanos triumphant, most viewers are expecting that to be put right in the next Avengers movie. After all, the confirmed deaths include characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange - heroes who are already booked for sequel movies. That means the "snap" will somehow be undone. But this synopsis teases that the stakes are even higher than we'd believed. Thanos has already erased half the life in the universe, but according to this synopsis, the surviving Avengers will learn "how fragile this reality is." They aren't just fighting to undo Thanos's horrific action; it looks as though all of reality itself is on the line here.

The reference to "sacrifices" is hardly a surprise. Infinity War ended with only a few heroes left alive; the original Avengers, plus a couple of secondary characters and Rocket Raccoon. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth are all coming to the end of their Marvel contracts, making Avengers 4 something of a "last hurrah" for the original team. While it's possible one or two of the Avengers will simply choose to retire - perhaps Tony Stark and Pepper Potts will actually have a family? - the reality is that most viewers are expecting there to be a heavy price for victory in Avengers 4. This synopsis certainly suggests that those fears are well-founded.
