Benedict Cumberbatch Was 'Thrilled' By Avengers 4 Story Pitch

Benedict Cumberbatch is thrilled over the story Avengers 4 is going to tell. Marvel Studios shook up the Marvel Cinematic Universe just a few months ago with the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos won and wiped out half of the universe, but there's still a reason to be hopeful going into next year's followup. The events that have transpired are part of the 1 scenario out of 4,000,605 that resulted in the Avengers being victorious.

It appears Doctor Strange's end game is in full effect after sacrificing the Time Stone, with the knowledge that soon after Thanos would remove him and many other heroes from the universe. We don't officially know much of anything when it comes to Avengers 4, and Marvel is hoping to keep it that way (as long as Tom Holland can stop spoiling things). Still, they're surely hoping audiences will respond just like Cumberbatch did to the film's larger story.

The Star spoke to Cumberbatch recently and asked him about the the cliffhanger ending to Infinity War. He didn't reveal anything about the next Avengers movie, but did say that he was thrilled not only with how Infinity War was handled, but equally as happy with the story he was pitched for its sequel:

I was thrilled. Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled and thrilled with the pitch for the second film. And thrilled by the ingenuity of the whole thing. And to be in an audience and experience that was something else. I’ve been part of Sherlock, with a very famous cliffhanger. It’s a very brave thing for movies that are that big, bold and colourful.

Doctor Strange and Original Avengers

Cumberbatch is the latest MCU actor to hype up the upcoming events of Avengers 4, and everyone is pointing to something unexpected. Cumberbatch described it as ingenious, so there are definitely going to be some aspects that will surprise. If Chris Hemsworth it to be believed, Avengers 4 is "even more shocking" than what happened throughout Infinity War. That is a high bar to try and exceed, but hopefully Marvel's done just that after all the buildup and years of planning.

Marvel Studios previously provided a tease for the story of Avengers 4 by saying it's about becoming "a true team." With only the original Avengers, War Machine, Nebula, Rocket, Captain Marvel, and Ant-Man left standing, the new additions will need to learn this lesson quickly, but the repairing of relationships among the OG Avengers could be rather difficult. These developments are expected though, but not everything will be.

Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely previously teased Avengers 4 "doesn't do what you think." We'll obviously have to wait and see whether or not that is the case, as many believe the film involves time travel and/or alternate dimensions/realities. If they've managed to do something completely unexpected, then this could be the ingenuity Cumberbatch is referring to. Hopefully, everyone will be just as thrilled as Cumberbatch currently is come next year when Avengers 4 is actually released.
