Avengers 4 directors Joe and Anthony Russo say that Captain America and Black Widow will have a "harder edge" in the Phase 3 capper. Not much is known with regard to the plot of the film with Marvel Studios remaining mum about the project, but the cast and crew are supposedly back on set for mandatory reshoots and additional photography that's expected to last the whole summer.

It's no secret that both Captain America and Black Widow were sidelined in AvengersInfinity War so the film could shine a light on all the characters, something that their fans weren't thrilled about - especially considering that they were part of the original Avengers. That said, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely previously shared that the two will have an intense arc coming into Avengers 4 to make up for being shortchanged in Avengers 3. Now, the Russos offer a bit more insight regarding what fans can expect for them in next year's still-untitled film.

Breaking down all key players in Infinity War with Wired (via CBR), the directing duo shared that the two heroes will have a "harder edge" in the much-anticipated superhero blockbuster. The Russos, who started their Marvel journey helming The Winter Soldier - the same film Natasha and Steve were first partnered up (together with Sam Wilson/Falcon), cite how the two's history together contribute to what kind of heroes they'll ultimately be in Avengers 4.

“In Winter Soldier, what we found so compelling about pairing her up with Captain America was that he is this paragon of morality, and she is a paragon of gray. But they’ve grown together, and I think when you find them in [Infinity War], they’ve been the Secret Avengers for two years… they’re like a tight-knit family now. Her, Sam Wilson, and Steve Rogers. It’s hardened all of them in a way.”

The Secret Avengers looking up in Avengers Infinity War

With two years having passed between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War, the Secret Avengers roamed the world to fight the causes they believe in underground. The Avengers 3 prelude comics caught fans up with what Cap, Nat and Sam were up to before they came in to rescue Vision and Scarlet Witch from Black Order members Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive. But, admittedly, it's still different hearing them share how they've been during that time, something that they weren't able to do (other than a short chat with Rhodey in the Avengers headquarters) due to the imminent threat that was Thanos. Given this, it felt like they were lost in the shuffle of characters in the whole film which is what fans are hoping to be rectified in Avengers 4.

Popular rumors for Avengers 4 claim that there could be another time jump between the film and its predecessor. Considering where Infinity War left things for the remaining heroes, it's curious if the team will immediately band back together and work for years trying to figure out how to defeat Thanos or if they'll continue to be separated. Fans know that the majority of the key players are in Wakanda, with Tony alongside Nebula stranded in Titan, but if a time-jump is ensued, it'll be interesting to see how each of the remaining heroes will deal with the aftermath of Thanos snap individually.
