Where Is The Soul Stone? We Round Up The Best Avengers: Infinity War Theories

Soul Stone Potential Locations in the MCU

UPDATE: Read Avengers: Infinity War’s Soul Stone Location Explained

Where is the Soul Stone? After a decade of Marvel movies, all but one of the Infinity Stones have been brought into play. The Soul Stone, though, remains a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. The recent Avengers: Infinity War Prelude comic revealed that the Soul Stone's location isn't even known by the Masters of the Mystic Arts, who were actually aware the Power Stone had been secreted away on Morag. Chillingly, they consider the Soul Stone to be the most dangerous of all the Infinity Stones. It's sure to play an important role in Avengers: Infinity War.

Fans were convinced that last year's Thor: Ragnarok would reveal the Soul Stone's location; it didn't. They then suggested it was the secret of Wakanda's mysticism, but Black Panther didn't introduce the Soul Stone either. Marvel knows fans are excited about the Soul Stone, and they're clearly enjoying keeping it in hiding until the right moment. With Thanos aiming to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet, only one thing's for sure; the Soul Stone has to appear in either Infinity War or Avengers 4. With less than a month to go before Infinity War's release, the Internet is buzzing as never before with theories and speculation about the Soul Stone's location. Here are the best fan-theories in circulation!

The T.H.A.N.O.S. Theory

Let's first discuss a common fan-theory; the T.H.A.N.O.S. theory. This idea posits that Marvel has deliberately secreted the Infinity Stones within objects whose first letters spell out the name 'Thanos.' The Space Stone is in the Tesseract, the Reality Stone is the Aether, the Time Stone is contained within Doctor Strange's "necklace," the Power Stone is in an Orb, and the Mind Stone was originally in Loki's Scepter. If this theory is accurate, the Soul Stone is somehow connected to the letter "H." This has led many fans to speculate that the Soul Stone is tied to Heimdall, or to the Heart-Shaped Herb, or even to "Him" (Adam Warlock).

This is likely a case of fans seeing patterns that aren't there. For one thing, the T.H.A.N.O.S. theory only works if you're extremely specific with some of the Stones (the Tesseract and the Orb, for example), and incredibly general in describing the Eye of Agamotto. Meanwhile, it also assumes Marvel always knew certain objects would become Infinity Stones. The Tesseract, for example, was clearly originally intended to be the MCU's equivalent of the so-called "Cosmic Cube," a reality-warping device in the comics. That's why it's energy can be leached to create weapons in Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers. It's essentially been retconned into becoming an Infinity Stone.

There's still a chance there could be something to the T.H.A.N.O.S. theory, though. Marvel does like to acknowledge fan-theories, even declaring some of them to be canon; the most recent example was the decision to retcon the young Peter Parker into Iron Man 2. Given the popularity of the T.H.A.N.O.S. theory, Marvel may decide to respect it by linking the Soul Stone to the letter "H." But it seems a stretch. Don't count on this being the case.
