Avengers: Infinity War will have the biggest superhero roster the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had so far, so it could be confusing and difficult for some to follow the lead – luckily, there’s Erik Selvig to explain it all. Infinity War will bring together the majority of heroes from the MCU up to date in order to fight the ultimate threat: Thanos and the power that comes with the infinity gems and the infinity gauntlet.
Those who attended Marvel's panels at D23 Expo and San Diego Comic Con had the chance to see the very first teaser of the third Avengers film, and while there were multiple descriptions all over the internet and even some leaked footage, it’s easy to get lost on what is going on with the Avengers and the Guardians vs Thanos. However, there’s a beloved character in the MCU that, with the help of a skilled internet user, can give us a short but detailed description of what went down in that trailer: none other than Dr. Erik Selvig.
An Imgur user made a gif with footage of Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) from Thor: The Dark World explaining the Infinity War teaser. The original scene has Selvig explaining the realms to fellow patients in an institution (including Stan Lee) – a few subtitles here and there and it’s the perfect scenario for an Infinity War explanation.
Selvig begins explaining that the Avengers will fight this “big bald purple man” called Thanos who came down from a big round ship through a portal and has this "metal glove". Thanos then raises his fist in the air and a moon (or maybe a planet) comes crashing down, with the Avengers looking in terror. Then comes the title – which according to Selvig is some “great stuff” – followed by bearded Captain America, Loki giving the Tesseract to Thanos, Thor getting his head crushed, Spider-Man in the Iron Spider suit, blonde Black Widow, Gamora crying, and the Black Dwarf or “whatever stupid name he goes by now”.
Closing this short but solid description, Stan Lee asks the question every Marvel fan who was not at Marvel’s panel at either D23 Expo or SDCC has been asking: when are they gonna release it in HD?
The creator of this fun Selvig gif managed to synthesize a bunch of details without losing the point or making it confusing. The teaser also showed characters like Doctor Strange, the rest of the Guardians, Black Panther, and the Winter Soldier, but the highlights are definitely the ones included in Selvig’s description.
Marvel usually doesn’t release the same footage they show at conventions to the general public – with very few exceptions like Thor’s short-film with his roommate – so when the Infinity War teaser comes out it most likely won’t be the exact same as this one but will take some of the most important scenes from it.
