Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Infinity War just might be the biggest movie ever made; it's certainly the biggest superhero film. It will reportedly feature at least 76 characters, of which a large number has already been confirmed. And while it surely seems like everyone who's ever appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be appearing in Infinity War, that's not exactly the case. There are quite a few characters - some big, some small - that aren't confirmed for the film. However, that doesn't mean they can't still show up.
It's worth noting that a number of the following characters were showcased in Vanity Fair's photoshoot from November, which commemorated Marvel Studios' first decade in filmmaking, but that doesn't mean all the characters featured in that portfolio are slated to appear in Avengers 3.
Brie Larson is slated to play the title role in Marvel's first female-led solo movie ever, Captain Marvel, but audiences don't want to wait until her standalone flick to see her on the big screen. Carol Danvers possesses a slew of abilities that can assist the Avengers in Infinity War. Unfortunately, Larson isn't on the film's cast list.
Of all people, though, Captain Marvel not appearing in Avengers 3 actually makes sense. She hasn't even made her MCU debut yet, and she's not scheduled to do so until 2019. And since her solo movie is set in the '90s, it'll be interesting to see how (or if) her story factors into Avengers 4. But that doesn't mean she can't at least make a cameo in Infinity War.
Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is currently M.I.A. in the MCU. He hasn't been seen since he aided the Avengers in saving Sokovia's citizens in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He wasn't in Captain America: Civil War and it seems that he might not be in Avengers: Infinity War either, which is an egregious mistake. Marvel would be remiss if they didn't bring back the man who started it all for the movie that marks the beginning of the end of the MCU's first saga. But, it looks like he's at least going to be appearing in Avengers 4.
Steve Rogers and the Carter family go way, way back, but they're all but gone from the MCU now. Peggy Carter passed away (canonically), and Sharon Carter, aka Agent 13, has gone underground. Sharon last appeared in Captain America: Civil War, in which she helped Rogers, Bucky, and Falcon, flee the authorities (namely Iron Man).
Considering her and Rogers' present situations, her appearance in Infinity War seems rather irrelevant. Also, another reason Carter may not appear in the movie is because of Emily van Camp's previous commitment to starring in FOX's The Resident TV series.
Jaimie Alexander had a prominent role in Thor's life in Phase 1 and Phase 2, but she's been absent in Phase 3, and there's no telling if she'll be in Phase 4 or not. At the moment, Sif's whereabouts in the MCU are unclear, but one thing's for sure: she will not be appearing in Infinity War.
Alexander's previous commitments to NBC's Blindspot precluded her from appearing in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, but that ended up being a blessing in disguise seeing as she's one of the few Asgardians still alive. Plus, it seems she may survive Infinity War as well... by not being in the movie.
Idris Elba not appearing in Avengers 3, at least in a cameo role, is curious seeing as Heimdall was on the ship with Thor, Loki, and Hulk heading for Earth at the end of Thor: Ragnarok - and all three of them are in Infinity War. So, that begs the question, what's going to happen to Heimdall? Seeing as Elba is not confirmed to appear in Infinity War, we'll just have to wait and see if he's killed off-screen when Thanos and the Sanctuary-II come knocking.
Paul Rudd is confirmed to be reprising his role as Ant-Man in Avengers 3, but it's unclear at the moment if his superhero counterpart, Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp, will also be appearing in the movie. Evangeline Lilly made her debut as Hope van Dyne in Peyton Reed's Ant-Man, and she's slated to receive an upgrade as the Wasp in Reed's Ant-Man and The Wasp later this summer, but for now, it looks like that's the only Marvel movie she's scheduled to appear in this year.
Taneeler Tivan, aka the Collector, was recently confirmed for Avengers 3, but his brother isn't. En Dwi Gast, aka Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), is certainly a powerful being and someone that could be useful to the Avengers. Fans would undoubtedly like to see him appear side-by-side the Collector on the big screen, but unfortunately, the Grandmaster doesn't have much a role in the fight between Thanos and, well, everyone else. Tivan, on the other hand, still has one of the Infinity Stones in his possession.
