The Avengers are entering a new era with a new creative team, a new lineup, and a new direction for Earth's Mightiest Heroes - now with Captain Marvel as their leader. Following Jason Aaron's five-year run on the title, Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa are set to take over with a total relaunch of the team starting with Avengers #1 this May. The updated team roster has some of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe and could shape up to be one of the most consequential Avengers stories to date.In a Polygon exclusive, fans get to see the first five pages of the upcoming issue 1. With Captain Marvel set to take on the role of team leader alongside teammates Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Thor, the Scarlet Witch, and the Vision, this showcase of the A-List squad is a promising start to the next phase of Avengers storytelling. The preview gives some insight into how the team comes together, with Captain Marvel admitting that the new team is so strong, she's essentially commanding "a pantheon of gods."

Avengers Preview Showcases One of the Strongest Teams Ever

If the star-studded lineup isn't enough to get readers excited, the team dynamics are sure to offer a fresh spin on the roster of veteran Avengers heroes. MacKay confirms that Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel will act as team leader this time around and that promoting her to that position is "simply a logical progression" of her character. Previews for issue #1 show Tony Stark AKA Iron Man revealing that Carol has won the vote to be the team leader. In accepting her new role, Carol and Tony reflect on what the Avengers have represented in the past, and how she hopes to shape the team into something new that lives up to their mission statement. The Marvel Entertainment trailer on Twitter alludes to this, with the team's lineup of so many classic Avengers heroes being a major point of excitement for Marvel and longtime fans, albeit with new dynamics that will come with Captain Marvel's leadership.

Avengers Trailer Shows the Promise of Marvel's New Era

The trailers and pages show the Avengers going up against Terminus - a wildly underrated Marvel powerhouse whose power has tested Thor and Hyperion in the past. There have been many Avengers rosters, from non-powered heroes to multiple gods, but there has seldom been a team that concentrated so much power and experience into a tight, expert strike force. However, with experience comes baggage, and it's clear that while Carol may be commanding gods with her new team, they'll be bringing unique perspectives that she'll have to manage.

The new team will be facing 'Tribulation Events' - disasters tied to Kang the Conqueror, who hopes to use the team to unlock a pocket of time he's so far been unable to access. With a lineup as high-profile as this era's is setting up to be, this new Avengers team will no doubt leave an impact on the Marvel Universe for years to come.
