Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Avatar: The Way of Water

The most recent addition to the Avatar franchise, Avatar: The Way of Water, possibly revealed what the titles of the upcoming sequels mean. Avatar: The Way of Water took audiences back to the world of Pandora after a thirteen-year hiatus from James Cameron's original blockbuster. The franchise is set to expand with a new movie scheduled for every other year for the next six years. While the titles didn't have much context before Avatar: The Way of Water was released, they may provide more insight now into what comes next for Jake, Neytiri, and their family.

In 2018, when the sequel titles were leaked, producer Jon Landau cautioned fans from reading too much into them, per Entertainment Tonight. The Way of Water was one of the leaked titles, and the second Avatar naturally centered around the beauty and interconnectedness of the ocean. However, there were also hidden details in Avatar: The Way of Water hinting towards the franchise's future. While the storylines for the next three Avatar films cannot be determined solely by the titles, they at least suggest the franchise's direction and potentially the films' settings, as exemplified by Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar: The Seed Bearer

Cameron revealed that the Na'vi would come to Earth within the next three movies. Given the titles of the upcoming films, a trip to Earth may occur as soon as the next film, Avatar: The Seed Bearer. Since audiences know Earth is dying and Pandora is thriving, Jake, his family, and other Na'vi might travel to Earth with some sort of seed from Pandora to try and help save it. Although it is rumored that the Na'vi will go to Earth in Avatar 5, it is possible it could occur sooner, especially as Cameron is a director who likes to keep audiences on their toes.

Avatar: The Tulkun Rider

As seen in Avatar: The Way of Water, Tulkuns are whale-like creatures that maintain a special bond with the Na'vi. They are extremely intelligent, bonding deeply not only with the Na'vi but with each other, and they can communicate complex thoughts and stories. Avatar: The Tulkun Rider tells audiences that even four movies in, the Tulkun will play a key role in the Avatar universe, enough to warrant a place in the title. It also means that it is likely to be another water-based movie, as Tulkuns are aquatic, so for any Na'vi to ride them, they would have to do so underwater.

Avatar 4 has already started filming, and Cameron has already stated that there will be a time jump between the third and fourth movies. This means that the kids most noticeably will be older, but a variety of events will have also transpired during this time. If Jake and his family did return to Earth during Avatar: The Seed Bearer, this could be their first time back to Pandora and reconnecting with the Metkayina clan in many years.

Avatar: The Quest for Eywa

Kiri and Eywa connect at the spirit tree in Avatar 2

Eywa played a prominent role in Avatar: The Way of Water. Kiri had been shown to have a special connection to the goddess, as she said that she could feel her strongly once the family moved to the Metkayina clan. She may set out to solve the mystery of how she was born from Grace's Avatar and who Eywa actually is. Avatar: The Quest for Eywa may center around Kiri and her connection to Ewya. Most importantly, Kiri will likely want to know how she is connected to Ewya, as this is an element that has already been teased and is likely to be expanded on in the third and fourth films, with Kiri herself taking on a more central role.

As this will be the franchise finale, something significant will likely occur that the Na'vi cannot handle alone. This would make the "quest" part of the title make sense, as Kiri may need to lead a group (or even strike out on her own) on a quest to find Ewya so that the goddess can help save Pandora or even Earth. Kiri might even be the titular seed bearer of Avatar: The Seed Bearer. Even though the titles provide limited information, it is exciting that Avatar: The Way of Water provided more context for what may be in store within the Avatar universe.
