Thirteen years after the first Avatar hit theaters, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered. The sequel followed in its predecessor's footsteps, dominating the box office and becoming the third highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar: The Way of Water continues the saga of Jake Sully and Neytiri, along with their family, which has grown since the first movie, but when a familiar threat returns, they must find a new home. As an old enemy draws closer, Jake, Neytiri, and their children must band together to protect their new home and the Na'vi that have protected them.

Screen Rant participated in a press event to celebrate the digital release of Avatar: The Way of Water. During this event, Landau led a Q&A, teasing more Na'vi to come in the future. He explains that there will be Na'vi with different physical traits and skin tones in the future.

Jon Landau: There will be different physical realizations of cultures on Pandora as we go through the series. They're also going to be different, as we did with the Metkaynia and Omaticaya, different skin colors, because that's part of our world.

Differentiating Na'vi Cultures Is A Key Part Of Avatar's Success

Avatar: The Way of Water's Metkayina, while similar, are very different from the Omaticaya Na'vi. The Omaticaya live in the forests among the trees, are dark blue, and have thin tails, while the Metkayina live on the water, are a lighter shade of blue, and have wider tails. The difference in physicality is tied to the environment they live in evolving to fit the needs of their home. The Metkayina's wider tails help them swim through the water more quickly without expending as much energy as the Sully kids.

These physical differences are the most obvious representation of the differences between Na'vvi cultures, but they only scratch the surface. Differentiating their cultures, their beliefs, and their lifestyles is an important part of expanding the world of Pandora and Avatar. This makes Pandora feel more real by mirroring the different people and cultures of Earth, which is a key component of Avatar's inspiration.

Avatar 3 will introduce new Na'vi and different parts of Pandora, including the Ash People, who will be a very different representation of the Na'vi than what has been presented thus far. Each new Na'vi culture will likely feature a different physical aesthetic with different skin tones and extremities, with the Ash people likely adapting to fit a volcanic biome. Avatar: The Way of Water is the first step in showing the different Na'vi cultures across Pandora and what ties them together, like their belief in Eywa and family.
