The upcoming Avatar sequels are will continue to expand the world of James Cameron's hit franchise, and the director now teases that future films will introduce a new nomadic clan of Na'vi. After the major success of the first movie back in 2009, Cameron finally delivered a sequel to audiences last year with Avatar: The Way of Water. The sequel's own success has now guaranteed that the planned third, fourth, and fifth films will all be moving forward, with each one expected to explore new regions and peoples of Pandora.

In a recent chat with franchise production designers Ben Proctor and Dylan Cole, hosted by Deadline, Cameron teases that a new nomadic tribe of Na'vi called the Windtraders will be introduced in future Avatar sequels.

In the video above, the director and production designers discuss their design ethos for not only Avatar: The Way of Water, but the three additional sequels as well, with each movie requiring a vast amount of world-building. While Cameron doesn't reveal too much about the Na'vi tribes that will be introduced, it sounds like the rainforest and ocean environments seen in the first two movies are just the tip of the iceberg. Check out Cameron's full comment below:

“There’s rainforest, there’s arctic, there’s desert, there’s oceans, all those different biomes and all the creatures and cultures. Not only did we have to do creature design, but we had to do cultural design and imagining what these different Na’vi adaptations to these different biomes might look like. Desert people, the Windtraders that travel around, that sort of thing.”

While many questions remain about how the story of the Sully family will continue to unfold in Avatar 3 and beyond, it's already been confirmed that the upcoming sequel will introduce a new volcano-based clan of Na'vi called the Ash People. The Ash People will be more antagonistic in nature than the Omatikaya and Metkayina clans, complicating the more straightforward dichotomy between humans and Na'vi that exist in the first two movies. The leader of this new clan will be played by Games of Thrones actor Oona Chaplin.

It's not yet clear how the Ash People will factor into the larger story of the Sully family, but Cameron has also revealed that Avatar 3 will introduce more friendly humans as well. Essentially, then, the entire dynamic between humans and the Na'vi is set to become much more nuanced as the franchise progresses. Avatar 3 and beyond will seemingly show that the Na'vi are just as capable of horrible deeds as the human invaders are.

With Cameron teasing that arctic and desert biomes will also be introduced in future movies, it would appear that Jake Sully has only just begun to explore what Pandora has to offer. While the Ash People may not be too friendly, it's possible that the new desert, arctic, and nomadic clans will be more friendly, potentially lending the Sullys a helping hand in their continued fight against the Sky People as the Avatar franchise continues to expand in exciting ways.
