Boomerang-wielding Southern Water Tribe warrior Sokka was one of the main characters throughout all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender - but what happened to him after the show ended? Fans first met Sokka as a young teenager who was on the ice with his sister, Katara, when the two of them discovered an iceberg with a boy and a sky bison frozen inside it. After being freed from the ice, the boy introduced himself as Aang, the long-lost Avatar.
Unlike the other main characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka didn't possess any bending talents. But what he lacked in magical ability he made up for in bravery, determination and confidence, wielding a boomerang as his primary weapon and later mastering swordsmanship. Despite often being used for comic relief, Sokka was an invaluable part of the team - especially when it came to strategizing.
After a trip to Kyoshi Island in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1, Sokka developed a crush on Suki, a skilled Kyoshi warrior. Later in the season he had a brief and tragic romance with Yue, a princess of the Northern Water Tribe, before she sacrificed her mortal life and became the Moon Spirit. Sokka and Suki later reunited and let romance blossom between them, but unfortunately it was never revealed in the comics or sequel TV show, The Legend of Korra, whether Sokka and Suki stayed together. That being said, we do know quite a bit about what happened to Sokka after Fire Lord Ozai's defeat in the season 3 finale.
Sokka In The Avatar: The Last Airbender Comics
Following the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon, Team Avatar's adventures continued in a series of comic books co-written by the show's creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Much of the comics deal with the team's struggle to deal with a world that is suddenly progressing rapidly, with the lines between the Four Nations blurring and an industrial age of refineries and machines creeping in. Early in the comics, Sokka assists Toph as she establishes the Beifong Metalbending Academy and trains the very first generation of metalbenders. He also assists Zuko in the search for the truth about his mother.
Sokka takes a more central position in the story in the comic trilogy "North and South," in which he and Katara return home to the Southern Water Tribe, and discover that their humble village has turned into a sprawling city. The Northern Water Tribe, seeking to colonize what they consider to be a less civilized part of their nation, plan to build a refinery in order to tap a rich source of oil underneath the ice. Sokka and Katara both struggle to deal with the fact that they can never really return to the home they once knew, but ultimately come to accept that the world is changing and they cannot go back.
Sokka's Adulthood, Death & Legacy
While some characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender return in The Legend of Korra, Sokka is already dead by the time the series begins. However, he does appear in a flashback in season 1, episode 9, "Out of the Past." Now in his 40s, Sokka serves on the United Republic Council, representing the Southern Water Tribe. He makes a somewhat boastful speech referencing his prowess with a boomerang, but while the old Sokka's personality is definitely still present, he has grown calmer and more eloquent with age. Later in Legend of Korra he is referred to as "Chief Sokka," indicating that at some point he became a chieftain within the Southern Water Tribe.
Katara reveals Sokka's death in the very first episode of The Legend of Korra, saying that her brother and many of her friends are now gone. Besides the flashback, Sokka is also seen memorialized in the form of a statue outside the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center. The statue is defiantly holding a boomerang aloft, confirming that while Sokka may have grown older and more respected, he always kept his most faithful weapon by his side.
