Square Enix is reportedly working on two mobile games based on the Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tomb Raider franchises. The long-running Tomb Raider series of action-adventure platformers began back in 1996, with the franchise's most recent release coming out back in 2018. While the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has yet to receive a major video game adaptation, characters from the beloved franchise do feature in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl as playable fighters.

Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has captured the hearts of many fans through its family-friendly tone, fascinating world, and intense elemental bending. Despite this exciting mix of qualities, the series has not yet received a major video game adaptation. However, protagonists Aang, Toph, and Korra were recently included in the Nicktoons crossover fighting game Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. The game combines many popular animated figures, ranging from Spongebob Squarepants to CatDog, with each character's moveset paying homage to their respective show. Along with this fighting game appearance, an Avatar: The Last Airbender tabletop RPG was recently funded through Kickstarter. The immersive role-playing game will let players experience the robust world of Avatar, including five different eras and an in-depth character creation system.

A report from IGN reveals that two new mobile games are being developed at Square Enix, bringing the Tomb Raider and Avatar: The Last Airbender franchises to phones everywhere. Both games are being developed by Square Enix London Mobile, a brand-new studio focused on mobile titles. The Avatar project is also being jointly developed by Square Enix London Mobile and Navigator Games, the developer of the turn-based role-playing game Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast. This could suggest that the Avatar game will be a turn-based role-playing game as well. Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider game, an action arcade game titled Tomb Raider Reloaded, was first announced in 2020 and is expected to release in 2022.

This year marks the 25-year anniversary of the Tomb Raider franchise. The action-adventure franchise has seen protagonist Lara Croft fight and climb through all manner of archaeological adventures, starting with an original trilogy and then continuing into numerous sequels. A 2013 reboot, simply titled Tomb Raider, sought to reinvigorate the franchise by adding more depth to Croft's character and enhancing gameplay with more options for players. The game's success led to two sequels, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which together forms a modern trilogy. For the franchise's anniversary developer Crystal Dynamics recently showed off footage of Tomb Raider Ascension, a canceled installment that features disturbing monsters and a survival horror tone.

With two mobile titles on the way, Square Enix London Mobile will soon introduce two exciting franchises to the mobile gaming world. The team's Avatar: The Last Airbender game will bring the beloved Nickelodeon franchise into the gaming sphere, likely in the form of a turn-based role-playing game. Meanwhile, Tomb Raider Reloaded will act as the first new title in the iconic franchise since 2018. Fans of both series, and of mobile gaming in general, should keep an eye out for both of these upcoming projects.
