Avatar: The Last Airbender recently made a long-awaited return to Netflix US, but how long will the popular animation be available for? Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender originally aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons between 2005 and 2008. Set in a world divided into four nations named after their mastery of one of the four elements - the Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe and Air Nomads - the show follows 12-year-old Aang – an Avatar who can control all four elements and restore harmony between the warring nations.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was a massive hit and earned itself not only a passionate fanbase but a host of awards including a Primetime Emmy, a Peabody Award and a total of five Annie Awards. The much-loved show has since spawned a franchise that boasts an ongoing comic book published by Dark Horse, a handful of video games and a similarly successful sequel series titled The Legend Of Korra that ended its four season run in 2014. There’s also the almost universally despised live-action adaptation directed by M. Night Shyamalan that came out in 2010, but the less said about that the better.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has recently been made available in many Netflix regions across the globe including Canada and the UK, but it’s been some time since Netflix subscribers in the USA have had access to the show. That changed when all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender were added to the Netflix US library on May 15 2020. As long-time fans and new viewers alike rushed to watch it, the series soon ranked as the streaming platform’s most-watched show. The question is, though, how long will Avatar: The Last Airbender be on Netflix?

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say how long Avatar: The Last Airbender will be available for Netflix subscribers in the US. It all depends on the terms and conditions of the licensing agreement Netflix struck with Nickelodeon, which aren’t details the streaming giant generally publicizes. There is a way to tell if Avatar: The Last Airbender is about to leave the Netflix library, however, as shows set to be removed within the next 30 days will notify users of the title’s expiration date.

There is a good chance Netflix will keep Avatar: The Last Airbender around for some time. Not only has it proved a big hit for the streaming service, but Netflix also recently signed a multi-year deal with Nickelodeon which would bode well for renewing the animation’s license agreement. Netflix is also set to make its own live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, so keeping the original series in its library for the foreseeable future would be a wise move to keep fan interest piqued in its forthcoming series.
