Warning: Spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender - Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy Comic

"SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!" Any true fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender not only knows what this is referring to but absolutely adores the man who sang it. The fan-favorite character "The Secret Tunnel Guy" has returned to provide Toph with some much-needed guidance.

The latest comic book entry into the world of Avatar: The Last AirbenderAvatar: The Last Airbender - Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy sees Toph's struggles with settling into a daily routine as a teacher after her globe-trotting adventures with her friends. The comic explores how bored she has become with day-to-day life compared to the excitement she felt while creating an entirely new form of bending. Through the comic, she meets a new character, a lavabender named Sun, who reinvigorates her interest in bending and inspires her to not only keep teaching but to keep learning. Before she finds this new lease on life, however, she encounters an old acquaintance, Chong the Secret Tunnel Guy!

While searching for answers about the mysterious bender she saw at a secret tournament (the previously mentioned lavabender Sun), Toph stumbles into Chong who himself seems to be in a bit of trouble. He recognizes Toph and she quickly helps hide him from a horde of adoring fans that simply won't let him be. Serving as a stereotypical hippie trope, Chong's entire character is centered around being overly introspective and insightful, something that is quite perfect for Toph at this moment as she is still dealing with the inner turmoil that she is facing. She allows herself to truly express her feelings and get to the route of her issues which Chong is able to provide advice to through telling his own story about his experience as a traveling musician.

Chong reflects upon how as he carried on and turned his music more into a profession than a hobby, the way he felt about it changed too, but one day his passion was reignited when he saw a young kid who had the same fire in their eyes for music as he did when he first started. Though what he loved about music changed, he found a new way to love it all over again thanks to this student, a parallel that reflects the overall story of this comic as Toph ends up taking on Sun as a student and re-sparking her own fire by doing so.

Yet again Chong managed to pop up for just a short bit and have a huge impact on the main character's journey and development, while also providing some much-needed comic relief. It's definitely a pleasant surprise to learn that Chong isn't just still living, but thriving, with his music now so popular that he literally has to run and hide from mobs of fans. Hopefully, this isn't the last we see of Chong, and with how perfectly he works as that random bit of introspection, it wouldn't be that surprising to see his return again in a future comic.
