Update: Avatar: The Last Airbender is now streaming on Netflix. Original article continues below.

Aang and his friends are coming to rescue people from boredom, as acclaimed animated fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender arrives on Netflix on May 15, 2020 - and here's our guide to what time you can start watching. Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the show originally premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005 and ran for three seasons.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a world where certain people possess the ability to manipulate the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. At the start of the series a novice waterbender called Katara and her brother, Sokka, discover a boy frozen inside a giant iceberg. He is Aang, the only airbender to survive a great purge by the Fire Nation, and he possesses a unique power. As the Avatar, he has the potential to control all four elements and is the only person who can bring an end to the Fire Nation's conquest of the world.

Fans of the show can rediscover Avatar: The Last Airbender when all three seasons release on Netflix at midnight PT, or 3am ET, on Friday 15 May. UK viewers can already watch the series, as it was added to UK Netflix in September 2019. Canadian subscribers are also in luck, as Avatar: The Last Airbender was added to Netflix Canada in 2018.

Avatar The Last Airbender Concept

Avatar: The Last Airbender was followed by a sequel series, The Legend of Korra. Unfortunately, there's no news yet of The Legend of Korra coming to Netflix. All four seasons of The Legend of Korra are available on NickHits, a channel available through Amazon Prime. The Legend of Korra is also included in the UK version of Amazon Prime.

Licensing Avatar: The Last Airbender is a strategic move for Netflix, which is currently developing a live-action adaptation of the show from the original creators. Netflix's version of The Last Airbender was first announced in 2018 but has been repeatedly suffered delays since then, the most recent delay being the current coronavirus pandemic lockdowns. In a recent Instagram post, Konietzko said, "we are lucky that our small team on the adaptation is still moving things forward as best we can, obviously all working remotely."

While we wait to see Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and the rest of the characters in live-action, the original series of Avatar: The Last Airbender can pick up new fans thanks to this Netflix release. And for long-term fans, it's the perfect time for a rewatch.
