Avatar: The Way of Water parallels another popular franchise, Star Wars, and the similarities may make Kiri even more important. Way of Water successfully managed to tell a complete story within the Avatar universe without leaving audiences on a nail-biting cliffhanger. However, the movie still left room for many unanswered questions and set up for the future films in the series.

The introduction of Jake and Neitryi's kids in the film shifted the dynamic of the franchise, as the characters all brought something new to the table, even shaping Jake and Neitryi's personalities in a new way. The most predominant child featured was the pair's adopted daughter, Kiri, who was born from Grace's Avatar and taken in by the Sully family. Kiri's storyline suggests that the filmmakers are setting her up for an even bigger role in future movies, and her arc could have a huge impact within the Avatar universe.

Kiri's Father Mystery Parallels Anakin Skywalker In Star Wars

Family dynamics within the Star Wars universe have always been complicated and, at times, messy. The mystery of who is Anakin Skywalker's father still hasn't been officially uncovered within Star Wars canon, but some theories are stronger than others. The biggest, and most likely theory, is driven by information gleaned from the films themselves and that is the idea that the Force is Anakin's "father" and that in its search for balance within the universe created Anakin Skywalker.

Kiri's father is also a mystery within the Avatar universe, although there are still three upcoming films that will hopefully clear up the mystery. As of right now, it has been heavily hinted at that Kiri has an extra special connection to Ewya like Anakin did with the Force. Both Ewya and the Force are higher powers that are abstract versions of deities, in a way. Kiri's father is just as mysterious as Anakin's was, so there is a chance that her "father" is not a human or a Na'vi, but Ewya herself.

Is Kiri The Chosen One In Avatar? What That Would Mean

Kiri and the Tree of Souls in Avatar

Anakin, upon his birth, started the Skywalker bloodline that connected the Skywalker's heavily to the Force. This enabled them to use the Force in ways beyond what most people were capable of, whether for good or for evil. This chosen one storyline could be mirrored in Avatar if Ewya is indeed responsible for Kiri's birth.

If Kiri is the chosen one in the Avatar universe, as it appears she already does have incredible powers and connections with Ewya, it would make Kiri's purpose in Avatar 3-5 all the more important. Having Kiri be the chosen one means that the final film will probably have her be the main protagonist and possibly set up future storylines featuring her own children. If that is the case, then the future of the Avatar franchise following Avatar: The Way of Water will probably lean heavily into the spiritual abilities of not only Kiri, but her bloodline, and how the family connects to Ewya.
