A new Avatar: The Way of Water trailer features director James Cameron and the cast promising a bigger and more impactful sequel with even higher stakes. Taking place more than 10 years after the events of the original Avatar, Cameron's follow-up is set to transport viewers back to the beautiful alien moon of Pandora. The story sees Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), now parents to three biological children and two adopted children, attempting to keep their family together while facing off against a powerful new threat. The sequel is expected to explore new, never-before-seen oceanic regions of Pandora in addition to introducing a host of new Na'vi characters.

As anticipation builds regarding the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, a new featurette released by the official Avatar YouTube channel teases the sequel's massive scale and stakes. In addition to showing off more of Pandora's beauty and the moon's flora and fauna, the trailer sees Cameron, Worthington, Saldaña, Bailey Bass, and Sigourney Weaver promising that the sequel will deliver a bolder, more emotional, and more high-stakes adventure than the first movie. How The Way Of Water Can Be Even Better Than The Original Avatar

Neytiri holds her hand to her face in Avatar: The Way of Water.

Cameron's original Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie of all time and scored well with audiences and critics, but the upcoming sequel has an opportunity to expand on certain elements. In the first film, Jake serves as an avatar of sorts for the audience, a blank slate through which viewers are introduced to Pandora and its native inhabitants, the Na'vi. The sequel can add more nuance and complexity to Worthington's character, digging deeper into his relationship with Neytiri and how he's changed since abandoning his human body and fully becoming a Na'vi.

One of the biggest strengths of the first Avatar was its impressive world-building and Cameron's depiction of Pandora and the jungle environment of the Omaticaya clan. From what has been shown off from Avatar: The Way of Water in trailers, the sequel seems to be taking this to a whole new level by introducing a brand new oceanic biome and a new clan in the form of the Metkayina. This expansion of the world of the story goes hand in hand with the technological advancements that were used during production to bring the film to life. Avatar: The Way of Water was filmed using innovative 3D cameras and underwater motion capture technology, which already appears to be depicting Pandora and its native inhabitants with a level of realism that far surpasses the original movie.

It remains to be seen how audiences will receive Avatar: The Way of Water, but the film is certainly shaping up to be an exciting return to Pandora. By digging deeper into Jake and Neytiri and their new family, the sequel can add an emotional element that some audiences felt was lacking in the first movie. What's more Cameron, a self-proclaimed environmental advocate, can more fully explore the environmental themes that were present in the original to make Avatar: The Way of Water not only a visual delight but a rich, emotional, and timely entry in the franchise.
