A deleted scene from Avatar sets up the story for James Cameron's Avatar 2. When Avatar was released in 2009, the movie slowly became a worldwide phenomenon. The film's use of 3D and innovative technology made it a must-see for audiences, propelling it to become the highest-grossing movie of all-time until Avengers: Endgame surpassed it a decade later.
During this time, Cameron has been developing multiple Avatar sequels, which will now begin when Avatar 2 is released in 2022. The sequel will pick up several years after the events of the first film, with Jake Sully remaining a Na'vi and starting a family with Neytiri. Some of the young cast members confirmed for the Avatar sequels include Jamie Flatters as the oldest son Neteyam, Britain Dalton as the middle child Lo'ak, and Trinity Bliss as the young daughter Tuktirey. This development is quite natural given the passage of time between installments in the franchise, and Avatar originally had direct set up for the growing Sully family.
One of the deleted scenes from Avatar teased Neytiri being pregnant with Jake Sully's child. The scene came from near the end of the film, well after Jake and Neytiri shared an intimate moment under the Tree of Voices. It featured a voice-over from Jake discussing "new life" as he's shown touching Neytiri's belly to tease her pregnancy. Based on info for Avatar 2, this would be Neteyam. This is highlighted even more with the presence of noticeably pregnant Na'vi women and children featured throughout the sequence.
Even though this scene from Avatar didn't make the final cut, it does show the seeds of the plans that Cameron has for the franchise. Avatar 2 and the subsequent sequels have been in development for years and delayed multiple times. However, this deleted scene shows that the ideas he's had for how the story could progress were already in his mind during the first film. It's even possible that a scene similar to the deleted one could be featured in Avatar 2 as a flashback.
The introduction of Jake and Neytiri's family is going to be a big part of the sequel. Those involved with Avatar 2 have been hesitant to reveal too many details about the story, but the familial aspect of it has been teased repeatedly. Producer Jon Landeau specifically pointed to Avatar 2's story being about what a family will do to stick together, with the Sully clan being forced to travel across Pandora for a currently unknown reason. This family adventure is expected to be a big part of how Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuktirey factor into the story, although its also confirmed there will be several other young Na'vi and human characters involved.
