Vin Diesel gives a rather curious answer when asked if he'll be appearing in James Cameron's Avatar sequels. Following the incredible surprise success of Cameron's 2009 film Avatar, the prolific director announced he would create several sequels set within the world of Pandora. Though the number has shifted over the years, there are currently 4 Avatar sequels in the works, with the first slated to arrive in December 2022. This comes after Avatar 2 was delayed multiple times due to the pandemic and Cameron's own desire to create new technology.

The Avatar sequels will see the returns of several stars from the first film, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver. Cameron has so far kept much of the plot a secret, but a good number of new cast members have been confirmed for the Avatar sequels, such as Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and David Thewlis. However, there's been some confusion about one potential sequel star: Vin Diesel, who had seemingly confirmed his casting back in 2019 when he posted a video of himself and Cameron on the set of the Avatar sequels.

Little news about Diesel's involvement have emerged since then, and now the actor himself is playing coy about the possibility. While sitting down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, Diesel playfully dodged the question of whether he has shot anything for the Avatar franchise. "I have spent time with [Cameron]," he said, "but I have not filmed yet." Naturally, Horowitz jumped on the "yet" part and pressed him for more. After a long pause, Diesel added with a grin, "I love James Cameron. I love James Cameron, and I love the series, and I think it's safe to say that we will be working together."

Once again, this isn't quite a confirmation that Diesel will have a role in the Avatar sequels. At the same time, his long pause before he answered felt very telling, and his reveal that he'll be working with Cameron points towards Diesel appearing in the Avatar world. He could have been referring to another project, but as Cameron is pretty booked with Avatar 2 through 5, it seems likely Diesel meant the sci-fi franchise. This would be another major series to add to Diesel's filmography following his roles in Fast & Furious and the MCU.

Cameron's plans for Avatar are shrouded in secrecy, so it's no surprise that Diesel would have to choose his words carefully about a potential role in the sequels. It could be that he's playing a Na'vi pivotal to the story, or even that he's a new villain in the vein of Lang's Quaritch. At this point, the possibilities are endless. The only thing that seems clear is that he probably won't be in the initial movies. Since the first Avatar sequel is still well over a year away, it might be a while before Diesel sheds more light on his collaboration with Cameron, so the speculation may continue in earnest.
