A first-look image from Avatar: The Way of Water has revealed an in-depth glimpse at Kate Winslet's Na'vi character, who is confirmed to be a fierce warrior. The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron's high-tech blockbuster spectacle Avatar, which was released in 2009 and quickly became the highest-grossing film of all time. The sequel will continue to explore the world of Pandora, where the blue aliens known as Na'vi live.

The new film, which brings audiences to the shores of the oceans of Pandora, will combine memorable returning characters with a whole heap of brand new cast members. The actors returning to the franchise include Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, and Sigourney Weaver as a currently unspecified new character. The new performers joining the troupe this time around include Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Vin Diesel, and Kate Winslet, who previously collaborated with Cameron on his romantic megablockbuster Titanic in 1997.

Today, Empire released a special sneak peek at their July 7 cover story on Avatar: The Way of Water. The exclusive reveals a new first-look image of Winslet's character, the Na'vi Ronal. Winslet was also able to confirm details about the character, who is one of the leaders of the oceanic Metkayina tribe of Na'vi. The actress describes her character as a "deeply loyal and a fearless leader" and warrior. Check out Winslet's full quote and the new image below:

She is deeply loyal and a fearless leader. She is strong. A warrior. Even in the face of grave danger, and with an unborn baby on board, she still joins her people and fights for what she holds most dear. Her family and their home.

Kate Winslet as Ronal in Avatar 2 The Way of Water

This character has provided quite the opportunity for Winslet, who is returning to the James Cameron fold for the first time in over 20 years. The director is well known for featuring memorable action heroines in his films, including Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Conner in the Terminator movies and Sigourney Weaver’s Aliens. Although her Titanic character Rose was certainly a strong character, she wasn’t an action warrior in the same way that many of Cameron’s female characters tend to be.

Now that she is able to step into the role, Winslet will be able to flex an acting muscle she hasn’t had the opportunity to indulge in often throughout her career. Although she has played hardened or intimidating roles in her career, including in the miniseries Mare of Easttown and the Divergent films, Avatar: The Way of Water will allow her to be front and center in the action mayhem. Considering the heartbreak that Cameron has put her through onscreen, she certainly deserves this opportunity to have fun.
