Avatar: The Way of Water will pick up over a decade after the epic events of Avatar, and introduce the world to Jake and Neytiri's children. Official trailers for Avatar: The Way of Water have given glimpses of James Cameron's newest adventure on Pandora, which will see humans returning to the distant moon to go toe-to-toe once again with the indigenous Na'vi. The end of 2009's Avatar saw Jake Sully, a former US Marine portrayed by Sam Worthington, move permanently into his avatar body and take his place among the Omaticaya people. Since then, he and Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña, have added five new members to their growing family.

As well as giving audiences their first look at the Metkayina, a sea-faring clan of Na'vi including Cliff Curtis' Tonowari and Kate Winslet's Ronal, trailers for Avatar: The Way of Water have featured all five of Jake and Neytiri's children. Three of them, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuktirey, are biological, Kiri is an adopted Na'vi child, and "Spider" is an adopted human child, who was left abandoned in the RDA base after the humans evacuated in Avatar. Family will play an important role in The Way of Water and its sequels, here's everything to know about the leading couple's children.

Miles "Spider" Socorro

Spider (Jake Champion) smiling next to Recombinants in Avatar 2.

Spider is Jake and Neytiri's teenage son, a human who was left behind in Hell's Gate when the humans evacuated at the end of Avatar. Spider's real name is Miles Socorro, a name which has led many to believe that he is the biological son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, who will also be returning in an avatar body during Avatar: The Way of Water. Too young and small to safely make the journey back to Earth, Spider was abandoned and adopted by Jake to be raised in Pandora's jungle. The Night Sitter's Jack Champion will be portraying Spider and is billed to appear in all four of Avatar's upcoming sequels.

It's not hard to imagine that Spider's presence among the Na'vi will cause problems, with producer Jon Landau confirming that even Neytiri will have difficulty accepting him as her own son. Humans on Pandora have put the Na'vi through a lot of trauma, so having one of their enemies in their midst will surely cause some division. While Jake might be able to avoid the prejudice now he's in his avatar body permanently, Spider will have a harder time adjusting. Exclusive Avatar footage from D23 Expo featured Spider being kidnaped by Quaritch and his men, so the child will certainly have a huge part to play in the upcoming film.

Kiri

Kiri is Jake and Neytiri's other adopted child, who'll be portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in Avatar: The Way of Water. Weaver previously played Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar, a human scientist who sided with the Na'vi and paid the ultimate price in the battle, but Weaver was confirmed to be coming back for all of Avatar's sequels, though not playing the same character. Kiri shares some sort of connection with Grace, as she can be seen in footage saying "hi, ma" while observing Grace's avatar body in a glass tank. Kiri also shares human attributes just like Jake, with eyebrows and five fingers, suggesting she is part human, part avatar.

After months of speculation about how Grace and Kiri are connected, director James Cameron revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that "[Kiri's] born of Grace's avatar. It's a natural birth, but the avatar is brain-dead." This means that Grace was pregnant at the time of her death and that her avatar body was able to carry the baby to term and give birth despite not having a consciousness. Kiri's biological father has yet to be revealed, and will probably be saved as a surprise for The Way of Water's viewers, but Jake surely feels good having Kiri as his daughter as he valued his friendship with Grace so much.

Neteyam

Jake and Neytiri's oldest child is their biological son, Neteyam, who'll be played by The School for Good and Evil's Jamie Flatters in the upcoming film. Not much is known about Neteyam, other than he will be next in line to lead the Omaticaya clan if Jake were to die. As the oldest child, he will surely be protective over the others, perhaps joining in with his parents against the eventual battle with the RDA. Footage has shown him with Lo'ak introducing themselves to the Metkayina, and maybe showing some romantic interest in some members of the reef clan.

Lo'ak

As the second son and the youngest boy of Jake and Neytiri's family, Lo'ak has been shown to feel like an outcast among his own people. Portrayed by Ready Player One's Britain Dalton, Lo'ak has received most of the attention of promotional material for The Way of Water, following in his father's footsteps as the misfit who steps up to his role, and even seems to be forming a romantic relationship with Bailey Bass' Tsireya of the Metkayina clan, who tells him that she sees him in the trailers. Through his bonding with a tulkun, a sentient whale species, he has proven himself as brave and bold as his father.

Tuktirey

Tuktirey is the youngest of Jake and Neytiri's children, an eight-year-old daughter who'll be played by Trinity Jo-Li Bliss from Turning Red, and is referred to by her nickname, "Tuk." Avatar: The Way of Water's trailers have shown Neytiri during one of her pregnancies, which is likely to be Tuk, as she is the youngest of the Sully family. Tuk is shown to have a close relationship with her older adoptive sister, Kiri. In the Avatar: The High Ground graphic novel series which serves as a prequel to The Way of Water, Tuk is taken hostage by humans on Pandora before being freed and reunited with her family.

More is set to be revealed about Jake and Neytiri's family when Avatar: The Way of Water releases on December 16, 2022, with family set to be a theme that continues on through all four of the Avatar sequels. The dynamic between Jake and Neytiri will certainly have changed since the last time viewers saw them, so it will be interesting to see what effect a large family has taken on the pair. The young cast playing Jake and Neytiri's children in Avatar: The Way of Water are billed to appear in all the upcoming films, so the family will only grow and get stronger as time progresses.
