Here's everything we know about Ava 2, including the chances of it happening, when it could release, and what it might be about. In December 2020, Netflix released Ava, an original movie about an assassin with unresolved personal issues. Ava marks the latest collaboration between director Tate Taylor and actress Jessica Chastain, who previously collaborated for the 2011 drama The Help. The film technically isn't a Netflix original, as it was produced by Voltage Pictures/Freckle Films and received a theatrical run before debuting on the streaming service.

In Ava, Chastain stars as professional assassin Ava Faulkner. After a hit-gone-wrong in Riyadh, Ava's supervisor Duke (John Malkovich) takes responsibility but knows that his protégé has been known to compromise missions by speaking too much with the targets. Meanwhile, Duke's boss Simon (Colin Farrell) decides that Ava can no longer be trusted, and enlists his daughter, Camille (Diana Silvers), to help track the assassin's movements. When Chastain's character reunites with her sister after eight years, she learns that her sibling is now dating her former fiancée, Michael (Common). As Ava reflects about the past, she's forced to deal with the unfortunate realities of her chosen profession. The Netflix film was written by Matthew Newton, who stepped down as the original director after reports surfaced about a history of domestic abuse.

Ava's storyline mostly revolves around the protagonist's relationship with her family and Duke, along with the looming threat that is Simon. For some extra narrative conflict, Chastain's character tries to assist her ex-fiancée with a rather significant gambling debt. Baddies are beaten up in the process, which builds to a thrilling final act and a climactic showdown in Boston.

Will Netflix Make Ava 2?

Ava John Malkovich

Critics have been less than impressed with Ava, yet poor reviews won't necessarily affect whether or not producers move forward with Ava 2. As previously noted, Netflix didn't actually produce the movie but rather acquired it after the fact. Moving forward, a potential sequel could indeed be produced by the streaming service. For Netflix, it's the viewing numbers that matter, and making sure that subscribers are entertained during the 97-minute runtime. Ava has a high-profile cast, along with a relatively simple premise, and the ending blatantly sets up a second installment.

Ava 2 Release Date

Ava Colin Farrell

If a sequel does happen, Netflix could potentially release Ava 2 by 2022. However, scheduling conflicts could certainly delay the process given the big names attached. Given all the uncertainties, Ava 2 probably won't release until 2023, if greenlit.

Ava 2 Cast

Ava Common

Ava kills off two of the main players; however, Chastain will undoubtedly return for Ava 2. In supporting roles, expect Common to reprise his role as Michael, along with Geena Davis as Ava's mother and Jess Weixler as Ava's sister. The producers may need to cast a new villain given what transpires in the original film's final act.

Ava 2 Story Details

Ava with a gun.

Ava ends with Chastain's character taking care of Michael's gambling debts and subsequently learning that Simon killed Duke. The climax involves a chaotic and bloody showdown between the assassin and her enigmatic boss, with both characters forced to flee because of approaching police officers. Ava quickly tracks Simon down, though, and puts a bullet in his forehead. The movie ends with Simon's daughter Camille keeping a close eye on her father's killer.

For Ava 2 - potentially a Netflix OriginalSilvers could very well become the primary villain. The basic plot will seemingly revolve around Camille's pursuit of Ava, and whether or not Chastain's character can stay sober in the process. With both Simon and Duke now dead, and Michael being fully devoted to the pregnant Judy, Ava will need a loyal ally in the sequel.
