Aubrey Plaza has a “really pivotal role" in the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos (via GQ), and the history of Marvel Comics can help predict who that character is. Perhaps the biggest indication of how successful WandaVision was, Agatha: Coven of Chaos will see Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness leading her own shown in what is one of the MCU’s most intriguing Disney+ projects. Considering that Agatha Harkness’ comic book history is quite long and complex, to the point the character cannot be labeled as just a villain, the MCU has plenty of options to create a large story focused on the mystical side of Marvel Comics with Agatha serving as the main character.

While the MCU is known for combining different characters into one or even reinventing lesser-known comic book characters into pivotal names, there are a few Marvel characters whose roles in Agatha: Coven of Chaos would make a lot of sense. Not much about Coven of Chaos can be inferred from WandaVision given that Agatha was not the focus of the show, yet the mystical side of Marvel Comics tells a lot about what Agatha’s future in the MCU could be – and who could Aubrey Plaza be playing in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. From the long-speculated Mephisto to Agatha Harkness’ granddaughter, here’s who Aubrey Plaza could be playing in Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Mephisto

Mephisto Marvel

While Mephisto’s arrival in the MCU has been played off as a joke since most of the WandaVision theories were proven wrong, Agatha: Coven of Chaos would be the best place to introduce the famous Marvel demon. Considering that a CG, all-red demon-like figure would not be a very inspired villain look for live-action, especially given that X-Men: First Class already featured Azazel, the MCU could reinvent Mephisto and have the character assume a human form played by Aubrey Plaza. In the comics, Mephisto’s story is heavily tied with Wanda, her children, and Agatha Harkness – which is why many believed that Mephisto would be in WandaVision.

Despite WandaVision proving all of the Mephisto theories wrong, the character could still work within Agatha’s story – especially if Wanda’s sons Billy and Tommy are involved in Coven of Chaos. In the comics, it was thanks to Mephisto that Scarlet Witch was able to give birth to Billy and Tommy, yet Mephisto would later reclaim their souls. Mephisto was also involved in resurrecting Agatha Harkness, who would then help Wanda forget that Billy and Tommy ever existed. While Billy and Tommy’s reincarnation did not involve Mephisto in the comics, the MCU could reimagine that storyline and have a manipulative version of Mephisto played by Aubrey Plaza benefiting from the returns of Wiccan and Speed.

Nightmare

Nightmare in the Marvel comics

While Nightmare does not have a lot of history with Agatha Harkness in the comics, it would make sense for one of Marvel’s most important mystical characters to have a “pivotal role” in Coven of Chaos. A being of the Dream Dimension, Nightmare was also heavily theorized to be in WandaVision given that Marvel’s Dream Dimension is where human dreams take the form of something real. The fact that Wanda was able to recreate Vision as well as give birth to Billy and Tommy suggested that her powers were linked with Nightmare, which turned out not to be the case. Still, given that Agatha is trapped in Scarlet Witch's illusion, Nightmare could yet be involved.

Similar to Mephisto, Nightmare is a character that could be reinvented in a lot of ways – including as someone pretending to be human. Aubrey Plaza could play a mysterious, deceiving version of Nightmare with perfection, and it would make sense for Nightmare to be Agatha: Coven of Chaos’ main villain. Agatha being trapped in an illusion created by Scarlet Witch’s powers could link her to the Dream Dimension and then to Nightmare, thus setting up a dangerous dynamic between Agatha and the Fear Lord. Compared to the often one-note Mephisto, Nightmare would be an even more inspired choice for Aubrey Plaza in Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Morgan Le Fay

Morgan Le Fay wearing a crown in Marvel Comics.

Marvel has its own version of Morgan le Fay, and the character would fit perfectly in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. In the comics, Morgan le Fay is described as being as old or even older than Agatha Harkness, who in the MCU seems to have a much shorter history compared to Marvel Comics’ Earth-616. Morgan le Fay is one of Marvel’s most powerful sources and has once tried to claim the Darkhold for herself and her followers. Therefore, having Morgan le Fay as Agatha Harkness’ antagonist in Coven of Chaos would work, especially considering that it was Agatha who introduced the Darkhold to Scarlet Witch in the MCU.

Morgan le Fay would fit the “pivotal role” mentioned by Aubrey Plaza and could match Agatha Harkness’ powers in the MCU, something that not many characters can do. That considered, Aubrey Plaza playing Morgan le Fay would generate a tricky canon problem for the MCU. That is because Morgan le Fay has already appeared in Marvel’s Runaways, whose MCU canon status is still open for debate. Runaways, just like Cloak & Dagger, is in a similar canon situation as Agents of Shield – meaning that it references the MCU but was never acknowledged in a Marvel Studios’ MCU movie or show. Runaways’ Morgan le Fay was played by Elizabeth Hurley.

Agatha Harkness’ Daughter

In the comics, Agatha Harkness has a son – Nicholas Scratch. Born in what would later become Marvel’s New Salem, Nicholas Scratch was referenced in WandaVision as Agatha's bunny, and there is enough room in the character’s history for the MCU to reinvent Agatha’s child. Considering that Agatha Harkness is at least 300 years old in the MCU, Aubrey Plaza could play an adult version of Agatha’s daughter, borrowing elements from Nicholas Scratch’s story. An interesting way to reinvent Marvel’s New Salem for the MCU would be to have the citizens of Westview, who were victims of Scarlet Witch’s magic, become the founders of what will one day be New Salem.

A reimagined version of New Salem created by Agatha Harkness would ask for Nicholas Scratch’s story to be incorporated into Coven of Chaos, a role that could be filled by Agatha Harkness’ daughter. Agatha Harkness made her debut in a Fantastic Four comic, and New Salem’s Nicholas Scratch would be a way for the MCU to connect Agatha with the yet-to-appear Fantastic Four. Agatha Harkness’ son once learned how to travel to the Negative Zone using magic instead of science and was able to possess Franklin Richards, son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, previously referenced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Agatha Harkness’ Granddaughter

The Salem's Seven huddled together in the comics

Another possibility for Aubrey Plaza’s Agatha: Coven of Chaos character to be related to Agatha is if she’s one of Salem’s Seven. In the comics, Agatha’s son Nicholas Scratch had seven magic children who would live in New Salem and were known as the Salem’s Seven. More skillful than the usual magic-trained beings that lived in New Salem, the Salem’s Seven are among Marvel’s most powerful magic characters and could be incorporated into Agatha: Coven of Chaos. There was never an actual Salem’s Seven leader other than Agatha herself, but the MCU could reinvent the group by having Aubrey Plaza play one of Agatha's granddaughters who would form and lead the group.
