Here’s the powerful Jaw Titan from Attack On Titan explained. Created by manga artist Hajime Isayama, the critically acclaimed Attack On Titan franchise is set in a fictional nation named Eldia in which people are forced to live in settlements surrounded by massive walls that protect them from the ever-present threat of Titans – a race of giant, misshapen humanoids who mindlessly roam the land and seem to exist only to gobble up any and all people who have the misfortune of encountering them.

Attack On Titan features a few different types of Titan. While the vast majority are the mindless creatures described above (AKA Pure Titans), there is a small subset known as the Nine Titans who are much more powerful and possess human-like intelligence. The Nine Titans are actually fragments of Ymir Fritz’s - the original Titan - power, created when she died thousands of years ago and her soul was split into nine parts. Each of the Nine Titans possesses a unique power and are controlled by humans called Titan Shifters who have the ability to change into Titan form at will.

One of those Nine Titans is known as the Jaw Titan, which made its first appearance in Hajime Isayama’s manga in chapter 40 and Wit Studio’s anime in Attack On Titan's season 2 episode “Soldier.” The Jaw Titan is one of the smallest Titans, but its stature doesn’t hold it back – in fact, it’s something of a blessing that allows it to move much more speedily than its bigger counterparts. As its name suggests, the Jaw Titan has an especially powerful mandible that can easily chew through pretty much anything.

The Nine Titan powers are passed on to new generations via a couple of means – either by being transferred to an infant upon a Titan Shifter’s death or by eating a Titan Shifter. This means the Jaw Titan has had quite a few identities since its original incarnation. The first known identity of the Jaw Titan was Marcel Galliard, a warrior from the rival nation of Marley chosen to inherit the Titan’s power and sent to wage a war against Eldia. While on his mission Marcel was eaten by a Pure Titan which then regained its human form as Ymir, a character named after - but not to be confused with - Ymir Fritz

A few years later Ymir was consumed by Porco Galliard – Marcel’s brother and a fellow Marley warrior – who gained not only the power of the Jaw Titan but also inherited Ymir’s memories. The identity of Attack On Titan’s current Jaw Titan is Falco Grice, a Warrior cadet who was imprisoned in Eldia and transformed into a Pure Titan which then ate Porco and gained his powers.
