Caution: Potential spoilers ahead for Attack on Titan season 4

Yes, a Titan did just rip open its own stomach and pop Zeke's remains inside in Attack on Titan season 4 - and here's why. With the merciful news that Attack on Titan's final season will continue with a "part 2," fans could enjoy the mid-season finale without worrying about a rushed ending. And "Above & Below" does not hold back, with Pieck finally making her presence known on Paradis Island. Masquerading as another defector from Marley, Pieck convinces Eren that she's an ally and brings him out onto the rooftops, exposing the Founding Titan's location to her airborne allies. An Eren vs. Reiner rematch is on its way.

Eren's goal is to unlock the power of the Founder through Zeke, but the older Yaeger brother is currently splattered across a field, some distance from Shiganshina. Having previously been captured by Levi and impaled with a Thunder Spear, Zeke risked his life to break free, setting off the explosive. Levi was blasted somewhere, while Zeke's head and shoulders slumped onto the grass. In "Above & Below," Zeke experiences a vision of a strange girl. Shortly after, a Titan approaches, tears itself apart, and squishes Zeke's remnants inside itself. Even for Attack on Titan, it's a grim visual, but what's going on?

To begin with, Zeke is properly dying after triggering Levi's spear. Even with his Beast Titan, there's no sign of regeneration due to the sheer damage inflicted upon Zeke's spine. But the young girl he glimpses before turning cold is the biggest clue in understanding Zeke's Attack on Titan future. Based on images seen previously in textbooks and such, this girl is Ymir Fritz, the mysterious originator of the Titan power. The likes of Eren and Kruger have previously claimed that every Titan is connected via a pathway tracing back to Ymir, so it's perhaps not surprising that Zeke is seeing his predecessor as he edges towards death. But Ymir glances back at the current Beast Titan, hinting that she's aware of his presence.

Zeke in Attack on Titan

This is when an Abnormal Titan comes along to take Zeke into its body. Given that the other Titans on Paradis were destroyed years ago, this creature must be a wanderer from the forest - one of Levi's former soldiers transformed by drinking spinal fluid. By their very nature, Abnormal Titans act unusually, but even by those standards, the giant should've just eaten whatever remained of Zeke. Someone must be controlling the Titan, but Eren doesn't yet have that power, and Zeke has already lost consciousness, meaning only Ymir could possibly be pulling this Titan's strings, forcing Zeke into its body. Perhaps she's just a big fan of The Human Centipede, but it seems inevitable that Ymir is attempting to revive Zeke. His body can't regenerate itself, but if his remains were wrapped in the flesh of a regenerating Titan, Zeke's body might begin to recover. Titan biology is infamously vague, but this seems like the most logical reason for the gross act.

There's no telling why Ymir might want to revive Zeke, but the Beast is obviously of great importance. Plenty of royal Fritz family descendants have perished and Ymir didn't bother bringing those back to life. Perhaps Ymir secretly agrees with Zeke's "euthanasia plan" and champions his attempt to sterilize the Eldian race. Maybe the youngster has seen through the timeless nature of the Path that Zeke has an important role to play in events to come, and for that, he may need his arms and legs. Either way, Zeke would die without this divine intervention. The truth will surely be revealed in Attack on Titan season 4: part 2.
